Since 1996, our Blanding's turtle head-start program has been helping to boost the population of this state-endangered species in DuPage County! Blanding's are known for their distinctive yellow throats and smooth, speckled shells. The small, vulnerable hatchlings face high levels of predation when they first emerge from their shells. By incubating the eggs gathered from gravid mothers and raising the hatchlings until they are a bit bigger, we are able to increase their chances of survival once they get released into the wild. #conservation #endangeredspecies #turtle #turtles #Blandings #headstart #ecology #biology #environmentalscience

Did you know that the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is working to protect endangered species right in your own backyard? Through the use of head-start programs, the District helps to boost the populations of the Federally Endangered Hine's Emerald Dragonfly and the State Endangered Blanding's turtle. By giving the young of these species a head-start early in their life cycle, they are able to bypass the dangers of life in the wild, giving them a much higher chance of survival as an adult. In addition to habitat restoration and management, head-start programs are an important part of preserving our wildlife in DuPage County.

Happy Bluebird of Happiness Day! Bluebirds are associated with joy, luck, and happiness. They once faced steep population declines, but have now rebounded thanks to nestbox monitoring programs across North America. Fishing is a popular recreational activity in the DuPage forest preserves, but do you know the science behind maintaining it? Electrofishing is a powerful tool used to measure the health of our fish populations. It gives us a snapshot in time that informs ecological decisions.
