Atomic Bomb Dropped on Nagasaki (1945) In 1945, three days after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, the second was dropped on Nagasaki, causing Japan’s unconditional surrender and the end of World War II. The bomb killed between 60,000-80,000 people.

Operation Desert Shield Began (1990) In 1990, President Bush ordered Operation Desert Shield in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. It prepared American troops to join the Iraq war.

U.S. War Department Established (1789) In 1789 the Department of War was created by President George Washington. It existed until 1947 when it split into the Department of the Army, the Department of the Air Force, and the Department of the Navy, which would be collectively known as the Department of Defense.

Purple Heart Day was first created in 2014 to honor and remember the people who were wounded or killed in battle.

Air Force Day was created as a celebration of American airpower after World War II. Its creation brought the Department of Defense closer to establishing what is now the United States Air Force.

The U.S. Army Chaplain Corps was founded on July 29, 1775. It is one of the oldest and smallest branches of the Army. The members of the Chaplain Corps provide religious and moral support to the military whenever necessary.

World War I Began (1914) Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip of Serbia on June 28, 1914. After a month of unsuccessful attempts to keep peace, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and the infamous “Great War,” World War I, began. The United States would join the conflict in 1917. Almost 10 million soldiers died in combat, including over 100,000 Americans, and many millions more died from the war’s implications.
