About us

The Philanthropy Lab is a platform for learning, strategy and collaborative action, designed to help philanthropic funders work together to support greater impact. It is a place in which to set greater goals together, compelling us to work across silos to help more systemic change come about. We facilitate processes to help learn about new models, transform structures, and support new forms of collective action. Our guiding star is to support economies in service to life, with three active workstreams underway in areas of investment, tax and the legal rights of nature.

We're excited to share an upcoming in-person session, taking place in London, that is open to all interested funders! The Lab is a space to help funders connect and develop collaborative funding strategies to help shift economies to be in service to life. In addition, we aim to offer continuous learning and knowledge-sharing around new funding models and alternative approaches to supporting systemic change. We are very pleased that Jennifer Menke, executive director of Regenerative Earth (https://lnkd.in/egRyHw_G) and someone who has worked very deeply with numerous Earth-based wisdom holders, will be in Europe in the week of 14th October. Jennifer is also leading work around ‘sacred land contracts’ - helping land to own itself. We are planning to hold a two-hour session with Jennifer to explore how foundations can support new forms of land ownership. This session is open to any interested funders who may want to attend. Please get in touch with Andres Roberts from the Lab team if you might be interested in joining. 📧 andres@bio-leadership.org #philanthropy #nature #funding Environmental Funders Network The Bio-Leadership Project

**** FABULOUS NEWS!!! ****** ECOCIDE LAW TABLED AT ICC ******* https://lnkd.in/e_BsZS-H Super excited to share that this afternoon in New York, about an hour ago, the Republic of Vanuatu, co-sponsored by the Independent State of Samoa and the Republic of Fiji, *formally proposed an ecocide amendment to the Rome Statute* at the International Criminal Court’s Working Group on Amendments meeting - using the Independent Expert Panel definition (yes, that's the one we convened in 2021 that has been catalysing proposals of ecocide law around the world)!!! *This is a monumental step that will compel all States Parties to take notice.* There's already strong support from a number of the Permanent Missions in NY. Vanuatu is not pushing for immediate votes or negotiations, rather they are using the forum of the WGA to encourage all states to engage with the issue. This milestone has come just a few short days after an Ipsos survey revealed that an incredible *72% of the public in G20 countries believe ecocide should be a crime!* To meet both these extraordinary pieces of news and acknowledge the profound gear shift this represents, we’ve upgraded our brand and website, and we’ll be sharing some top-tier media coverage ASAP - the Guardian broke it just under an hour ago. Check out the new site with the exciting updates and news here: https://lnkd.in/ekSWzsak   The coming months will be both diplomatically delicate and immensely exciting, as the world truly begins to take this initiative seriously. ♥️♥️♥️🌿🌿🌿🌎🌍🌏

We are delighted that the Earth Funding Lab is gaining momentum! The Lab is a space to help funders connect and develop collaborative funding strategies to help shift economies to be in service to life. The intention of the Lab is also to offer continuous learning and knowledge-sharing around new funding models and alternative approaches to supporting systemic change. 💫 In this spirit, we are excited to offer two (free!) online sessions in October open to all interested funders. 💫 The topic of these sessions is Nature on the Board of Foundations. These 1-hour sessions are a first exploration into how foundations and philanthropic organisations might bring Nature on the Board. 🌱 On 1st October (12:00-13:00 BST), we will be joined by Alexandra Pimor 🌻🌍 from the Earth Law Center. Alexandra is one of the key people behind ELC’s ‘Onboarding Nature Toolkit’ as well as a new programme, the Dandelion Fellowship, to support those who want to become a nature proxy for the Nature on the Board movement. ➡️ Register here: https://lnkd.in/egCYCT33 🌱 On 24th October (11:30-12:30 BST), we will be joined by Brontie Maria Ansell of Lawyers for Nature. Brontie and Lawyers for Nature are at the forefront of Nature on the Board work in the UK and beyond and have worked very closely with organisations such as Faith in Nature in establishing Nature on the Board of organisations. ➡️ Register here: https://lnkd.in/eh8Kuxbs We're excited to be creating spaces where funders can connect and collaborate. Please do join us for either or both of these sessions, and spread the word! 📣 #philanthropy #nature #funding Environmental Funders Network The Bio-Leadership Project

Are you a funder working on the tax system to make a positive impact? The Earth Funding Lab is a platform, created by the Environmental Funders Network and the The Bio-Leadership Project, for learning, strategy and collaborative action designed to help philanthropic funders work together to support greater impact. The platform already has three practical workstreams, one of which is exploring how the tax system might evolve to serve life. This workstream focuses on exploring the points of confluence between the tax system and the climate and nature emergencies, seeking to identify ways in which the power of the tax system can evolve to act in service of life. Funders involved in this workstream are exploring five key areas: 🌀 Supporting the deepening of connections between the existing network of actors engaged with this topic 🌀 Supporting those actors to convert their existing policy recommendations and analysis into political reality 🌀 Supporting a shift in the public discourse towards greater government investment in climate and nature 🌀 Supporting amendments to taxes or tax breaks that are key to nature and climate impacts 🌀 Supporting legislative change to incorporate nature and climate into all tax decision-making Want to get involved? The next Basecamp Training begins this month (September) and is the first step towards joining the Lab and getting involved with any of the workstreams! You can learn more about the training here > https://lnkd.in/egdX6Kh9 Questions? Reach out to Hannah Temple (hannah@tealco.org) for more information. #philanthropy #funding #taxsystem

Our next Basecamp Training begins in September! The Earth Funding Lab is a place for philanthropic funders to connect, develop new forms of strategy, and work together towards greater impact. Our aim is to set greater goals together, compelling us to work across silos to help more systemic change come about. The Basecamp Training is for anyone looking to expand and evolve their thinking and practice around what an economy that serves life could look like. We'll explore how philanthropic practices might evolve to take us somewhere different and how we might discern interventions with truly systemic potential. You'll also connect with a faculty of leading practitioners, activists and thinkers who will guide us through encounters with different perspectives, knowledge and ways of being. Participation in the Lab workstreams is limited to funders, but the Basecamp Training is open to everyone who works in and with the Philanthropic sector! Want to learn more? **NEW BLOG - Updated Investment Policy ** This month, Alice Thornton has written a blog on the key changes we have made to our Investment Policy this year. The blog can be read here: https://lnkd.in/e2T_ej4m We review our Investment Policy every year - building on what we have learned and achieved, and striving to set out clearly what we want to do next as part of our commitment to advance wellbeing with 100% of our assets (our grantmaking, our investing and our wider operations). This year we have made several exciting changes, including: * Updating our approach to exclusions, including now excluding thermal coal, tar sands and new primary market capital for fossil fuel production and infrastructure * Updating our approach to responsible investing, in terms of taking a stewardship approach to producing sustainable financial, environmental and societal benefit, and emphasising again our determination to address the systemic impacts of the climate and nature crises * Updating our approach to social investing, including determining and agreeing our approach to making social investments within the next 12 months. You can read the full Investment Policy here: https://lnkd.in/ezZCVajg

Ah, it’s a sad day today as the sensational Florence Miller takes a step back as director of Environmental Funders Network and her work on the Lab. Florence has believed in the need for the Lab from the outset, seeing that in order to support greater change, the model through which funders support change must also evolve. She has encouraged our work with an amazing balance of dedication and gentleness and extraordinary knowledge, but more, she has done it with just so much care for people and all of nature and life, and a twinkle in her eye. Florence Miller thank you for everything: We will miss you so much… here’s to always honouring the spirals you helped to start and here’s to you going on to do other sensational things. Also from Hannah Temple Stella McLeod McKenna Erica Neve FRSA Andres Roberts Charlotte Millar Christina Williams and all the people involved in the Lab. 🙏🏼🌿🙏🏼🌿🙏🏼🌿 ✨✨✨✨✨✨

Are you a funder working to support the Rights of Nature movement? The Earth Funding Lab is a platform for learning, strategy and collaborative action designed to help philanthropic funders work together to support greater impact. We are already actively working on three practical workstreams, one of which sets out to support the rights of nature movement to grow, knowing that giving nature back its rights will transform the way our economy functions – and how society views nature. The six catalyst funders working on this workstream, with the support of groundbreaking rights of nature projects, have mapped several potential areas of change: 🌱 Supporting specific legal technical changes 🌱 Helping place-based projects grow that put nature at the heart of development 🌱 Shifting cultural narratives to support connection with and care for nature Want to get involved? Our next Basecamp Training begins in September and is the first step towards joining the Lab and getting involved with any of our workstreams! You can learn more about the training here > https://lnkd.in/egdX6Kh9 Questions? Reach out to Andres Roberts (andres@bio-leadership.org) for more information. #philanthropy #rightsofnature #nature
