We've all experienced it... that sweltering heat of a parking lot. This phenomenon, known as a "heat island" effect, is caused by human infrastructure like concrete and asphalt that retains the sun's heat. 🔥 Why "heat islands" matter: Increased Energy Consumption: Higher temperatures lead to more air conditioning use, spiking energy demand and costs. Health Risks: Heat islands can exacerbate heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations. Air Pollution: Higher temperatures can increase air pollutants and ground-level ozone, worsening air quality. Water Quality: Heated surfaces can raise the temperature of stormwater runoff, impacting aquatic life. 🌳 What we can do: Plant More Trees: Green spaces provide shade and cool the air through evapotranspiration. Green Roofs and Walls: Vegetation-covered surfaces can significantly reduce building temperatures. Cool Roofs: Reflective materials can help reduce heat absorption. Sustainable Urban Planning: Implementing eco-friendly designs and materials in city planning. Learn more from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) >>> https://lnkd.in/gXu_v8R

HAPPY JULY FOURTH, EARTHLINGS! We're celebrating an underappreciated animal icon of this summertime holiday — the humble (and sometimes aggressive) seagull. While all have large white bodies, dark wings, and yellow beaks, several distinct kinds of gulls grace the U.S. from sea to shining sea (or shining lake... or parking lot). Which of these five main types are hanging at your favorite summer spot? #SeagullSpotting #BirdWatching #Birding #CitizenScience PHOTOS: Amer Herring/Ring-billed Gull/Rhododendrites; Calif Gull/King of Hearts; Laughing Gull/Cephas; Black-backed Gull/Andreas Trepte avi-fauna dot info

🌊 Happy Clean Beaches Week 2024! 🌊 More than just a summertime playground, our beaches are complex (and VITAL) ecosystems that need protection. Check out these quick tips! 𓅪 Do Not Disturb: Keep your distance from dunes and animal life. Leave no trace and don't feed the gulls, people. 🗑️ Throw It Away: Obviously, don't litter... and go a step further by grabbing three pieces of trash on your way out. It's a thing called #Take3ForTheSea. 🌱 Choose Reusables: Pick sustainable items over single-use. Bring a water bottle, reusable bags, and containers. >>> WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE COASTAL HAUNT?!
