We're proud to support Sogorea Te Land Trust through the Just City Cultural Fund alongside our partners at Akonadi Foundation and the City of Oakland. Sogorea Te’ Land Trust is an urban Indigenous women-led land trust that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people. Through the practices of Rematriation, cultural revitalization, and land restoration, Sogorea Te’ calls on Native and non-native peoples to heal and transform the legacies of colonization, genocide, and patriarchy and to do the work our ancestors and future generations are calling us to do. Although Sogorea Te’s Just City Cultural Fund (JCCF) projects were profoundly impacted by the onset of the pandemic, they were able to continue Chochenyo language classes for the community and other critical cultural revitalization programs. Postponed projects included a ceremonial arbor on Rematriated Lisjan land in deep East Oakland and master classes with culture-keeping elders.

Alongside our partners Akonadi Foundation and the City of Oakland, we're proud to spotlight one of our Belonging in Oakland: Just City Cultural Fund grantees – NAKA Dance Theater! NAKA Dance Theater creates experimental performance works using dance, storytelling, multimedia installations and site-specific environments that challenge the viewer to think critically about social justice issues. Throughout their Just City Cultural Fund storytelling project, Naka Dance Theater’s working group hosted over 64 meetings to discuss topics including Black History in the U.S., abolition, reparations, solidarity, The Model Minority Myth, Black Lives Matter, and more. They also hosted workshops and gave presentations to other groups within Mujeres Unidas y Activas.

We're proud to support organizations like Kingmakers of Oakland through the Just City Cultural Fund alongside our partners at Akonadi Foundation and the City of Oakland. Kingmakers of Oakland works with schools and communities to improve the educational and life outcomes of Black boys from PreK through Ph.D. Throughout their Just City Cultural Fund project, Kingmakers of Oakland created a beautiful album, Black Joy, and music videos. Alongside the album, Kingmakers of Oakland created a curriculum and discussion guide so the music can be used to support culturally responsive curriculum. Their GLISTEN video won the People's Choice Award at the Afro Comic Con Film Festival and Kingmakers of Oakland sold out their first Black History Month film festival which created a place of healing, celebration, joy and afrofuturism.
