To replicate our successes History Lumin Education is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization which operates early childhood learning centers with programs to meet the needs of children from birth to age nine. Lumin Education was founded in 1978 for the specific purpose of proving that all children, regardless of race or income, can succeed in school when we start young and involve parents. From its humble beginnings of educating a single class of eight children in donated space, the original East Dallas Community School campus has expanded to a 5 classroom campus serving one hundred inner city children from primarily low-income families with daily classroom and outreach programs. In August 1999, Lumin Education opened a second campus that replicates the academic programs and success of the original model. In 2009, Lumin Education opened its third location in the neighborhood north of Bachman Lake (one of the poorest neighborhoods in Dallas, just north of Love Field Airport).

Thanks to your generosity, we’ve exceeded our Giving Day goal! With the $100,000 match from the Eugene McDermott Foundation included, you helped Lumin raise a grand total of $283,690 to support Dallas children and families. While we featured four stories of children and parents whose lives have been impacted by Lumin Education, there are more than 4,000 alumni whose stories we didn't have the chance to tell. Every dollar that you give to Lumin becomes part of the story of another child or parent. We couldn't do it without you!

I’m counting it all joy today. With that I mean the gratitude list is long. It includes the number of families Lumin Education has served since 1978! COMMUNITY MEMBERS are the reason the East Dallas Community School (now Lumin Education) began. PARENTS dared, dreamed, built with their hands, raised funds, and demanded a different educational environment for their children. For decades, Lumin has provided a high-quality Montessori environment for children of all academic abilities regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Lumin now operates in two neighborhoods: Bachman Lake and East Dallas. Here, Terry Ford and I share the story of how Lumin began with the children at the Opening of School ceremony last month. When you give to Lumin on North Texas Giving Day, your gift supports early education for children like Sam. When 15-month-old Sam* and his mom joined Lumin’s Home Visiting program in 2023, his mom was deeply concerned about his development. After an evaluation showed low communication scores, Sam was referred for Early Childhood Intervention and began receiving Speech Therapy. As Sam transitioned to our Toddler Montessori classroom, he initially struggled with independence, expecting others to assist with basic tasks. However, with the support of his teachers and interventionists, Sam soon began showing significant progress: dressing with minimal help, choosing his own activities, and initiating conversations. Sam’s growth reflects his resilience and his mom’s unwavering dedication. Sam’s mom is pursuing her GED while working to support her family and remains deeply involved in Sam’s education. The family has secured a safer living situation and achieved personal goals, contributing to Sam’s success. Sam continues to receive the support and encouragement he needs to grow into a healthy and independent person, both from his family and his teachers. * Names have been changed for privacy Giving is simple! The summer is coming to an end and so is the Better Block installation on our Bachman Lake property - but this is just one step forward on a path towards an even more incredible future at Lumin Bachman Lake Community School! We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to strengthen our partnerships with Bachman Lake Together, Better Block Foundation, and The Dallas Foundation this summer and can't wait to see what comes next.

Severe weather in Texas has hit us hard at Lumin Education and we need your help! Our Lumin Lindsley Park Community School campus has significant storm and sustained water damage, including needs for added drainage, fence repairs due to damage from a fallen tree, and critical structural repairs to one of our buildings. These unexpected repairs will cost $82,000. We rarely ask for emergency funds, but we need your help now.
