Last Saturday, October 27, marked one month since Hurricane Helene struck our home in Western NC. Amidst the chaos, immense grief, and destruction, we have never before witnessed such resilience, generosity, and tenacity. In a time of constant change and great uncertainty, we wanted to pause to reflect on the month of October and the steps that laid the foundation for rebuilding and moving forward. Focus: In crisis, we've learned to focus on what you do best. For us, that means making and selling pottery. After ensuring all of our staff members were safe and accounted for, our remote team quickly turned on an online “Seconds” Sale on the not-quite-right pots we sell at a discount to support our community partners. We pledged 5% of sales to BeLoved Asheville, Equal Plates Project, and PODER Emma, and gave customers the option to add direct donations when checking out. Since October 1, our community has raised $200K+, and we’re continuing this commitment through the end of the year. Assessing the Damage: Fortunately, our main production and fulfillment sites weren't damaged, though our creative and hand-thrown studio space was destroyed. We secured a 5000g potable water tank for our main headquarters. Within two weeks, water was restored, and we’re nearly back to full operation. We hired 18 temporary staff members to help with fulfillment ahead of the holidays. We’re grateful to be able to provide additional employment while so many businesses have been forced to shut down or reduce operations. Staying Grounded: We’ve also shifted to an entirely organic marketing strategy, re-prioritizing the personal storytelling that helped build our brand from the beginning: —On Instagram, you may have noticed more faces than pottery. We launched “Clay Crew Check-Ins” for updates from different departments: bit.ly/4e46XJp —Co-founder Connie Matisse has returned to share stories about local artists in need of support: bit.ly/3YrFr2z —With ads paused to maintain cash flow, we’re focusing on organic channels, press, and expanding our affiliate program. If you know potential partners, encourage them to apply here or reach out to press@eastfork.com: https://bit.ly/40l19b9 Moving Forward: Our team has been preparing for the holiday season, including reintroducing a favorite glaze, In The Pines. It feels strange to carry on amid such upheaval, but we’re grateful to keep supporting our team and community by doing what we do best: making and selling pottery. #Asheville #HurricaneHelene #AmericanManufacturing
