About us

About East Harlem Tutorial Program: East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) was founded in 1958 by a community leader whose love of reading and the children of East Harlem inspired her to offer a volunteer-run reading group in her living room. Since then we have grown from a tutoring program into a multi-site, multi-dimensional educational program that will serve more than 1,600 Pre-K to college students this year through our after-school and summer programs for traditional public school students; East Harlem Scholars Academies network of public charter schools; College Scholars program; and the East Harlem Teaching Residency. Today, EHTP is recognized as a leader among organizations working to advance educational outcomes and as an agent of change and thoughtful contributor to the national fight for racial equity. EHTP is on track to serve one-in-five East Harlem students by 2025, preparing them with the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to excel in college, lead in their communities, and realize their best possible selves. EHTP's Commitment to Racial Equity: EHTP aims to serve as an agent of change and thoughtfully contribute to the national fight for racial equity. Through our organization-wide commitment to anti-racism work, we prepare our scholars to effect change, challenge the status quo, and thrive in the world around them. Furthermore, as staff members we face our own racial identities and conscious and unconscious biases. With this in mind, all of our professional development, curriculum, organizational materials and processes are designed with a goal of racial justice. Last night’s EHTR Alumni event was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Hearing from our alums—from the earliest cohorts to our newest graduates—about how they’re applying what they learned in the program was both humbling and inspiring. Susan Gonzowitz, your presence was missed. EHTR wouldn’t be what it is today without the hard work and dedication we put in together in those early years. Rebecca Racine and Stephanie M. your leadership is invaluable—I’m so grateful for the ways you continue to uphold and strengthen our program. I’m a better leader because of the incredible team we’ve built and the talented TRs who challenge and inspire me every day. To all our alumni, thank you for embodying the EHTR mission and making a lasting impact in your communities. Your work fuels our vision and purpose. And now, on to recruiting cohorts 11 & 12! Let’s continue growing this mission together. #EHTRAlumni #CommunityImpact #EducationLeadership #VisionInAction
