The Eighth Amendment to the Constitution protects against “cruel and unusual punishment” for those convicted of crimes. But what makes a punishment cruel or unusual? Who decides, and how? Please join us for a special 2 PM program on Constitution Day that explores these questions based on Annenberg Classroom's newly-released short historical documentary The Eighth Amendment: Cruel and Unusual Punishment, which traces the concept of “evolving standards of decency” in the United States, specifically as it applies to the death penalty for juvenile offenders. Tuesday, Sept. 17: ESPHS presents four screenings of Annenberg Public Policy Center’s film The Eighth Amendment: Cruel and Unusual Punishment throughout the day, plus the launch of JUSTICE 101 season two in the evening! Thursday, Sept. 19: TED Conferences takes over ESPHS for a TED Democracy Fireside Chat hosted by Visit Philadelphia. Friday, Sept. 20: ESPHS presents a screening of A24's Sing Sing at 2:00 p.m., followed by a panel discussion with select cast and crew.
