The Eighth Amendment to the Constitution protects against “cruel and unusual punishment” for those convicted of crimes. But what makes a punishment cruel or unusual? Who decides, and how? Please join us for a special 2 PM program on Constitution Day that explores these questions based on Annenberg Classroom's newly-released short historical documentary The Eighth Amendment: Cruel and Unusual Punishment, which traces the concept of “evolving standards of decency” in the United States, specifically as it applies to the death penalty for juvenile offenders. Panelists for the program, which will be held at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, Inc and livestreamed, are: - Marsha Levick, one of the film’s commentators, Chief Legal Officer of the Juvenile Law Center, and University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School adjunct professor - Teri Ravenell, Dean for Faculty Research & Development and Professor of Law at the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law - Bryan Widenhouse of the National Life Without Parole Leadership Council and Families for Justice Reform Register for the livestreamed program here: https://lnkd.in/e2i9Z2rW https://lnkd.in/es8fm4-X

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829, 53 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed less than three miles away. As we embark on the 250th anniversary of that document's signing, it is crucial to reflect on a fundamental question: Have we truly established justice? In an era marked by mass incarceration, the answer appears increasingly uncertain. Join us on September 17 online or in person as we discuss this issue in partnership with The Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation and the Brennan Center for Justice.
