I attend #ExpoWest for a lot of different reasons: to interview founders and industry leaders, to hear good gossip, to check in with 30 Under 30 honorees and past profile subjects, to identify trends in the business behind food, and to hear what investors are excited to back. But I also go to meet new founders and companies, and to try new tastes and textures that blow me away. Let’s keep in mind: About 25% of the companies there, or some 840 brands, had a booth at the show for the first time. So, I thought, why not share what’s brought me joy? Here’s a roundup of my favorite food discoveries from this year's startup playground feast in Anaheim: -COYOTAS grain-free cassava tortillas from a husband and wife duo from Sonora, Mexico -Maazah Chutney dips -Fresh Vintage Farms cold-pressed walnut and almond oils from another husband and wife duo -Yaupon Brothers American Tea wild-foraged Yaupon Holly Tea from Florida -Big Picture Foods organic banana peppers and preservative-free organic olives -Ghetto Gastro waffles and syrup -Everiday Foods sambals and chili pastes -New York Shuk barbecue sauces, preserved lemon spreads and spices -Mr. Bajan Foods Caribbean Vietnamese Hot Sauce -Tsubi Soup miso soup from Japan In a sometimes sea of copycats (who else clocked Captain’s Booty?) and ultra-processed monotony, there were some bites from longer-standing companies that excited me, too. Those tastes came from the booths of A Dozen Cousins, Sun Noodle, Siete Family Foods, Zab's hot sauce, Harmless Harvest, De La Calle Tepache, King Arthur Baking Company, Pipcorn Heirloom Snacks , Savannah Bee Company, Honey Mama's, Mother-in-Law's kimchi and Lundberg Family Farms rice. I also got the chance to try (no booth) Myna Snacks’ better-for-you nod to Oreo, and, let’s just say, those didn’t make it much longer than a few minutes into the plane ride home. The Interact team made the annual pilgrimage to Expo West, the sacred gathering of almighty natural products. There we roamed to see the holy trinity of products - food, beverage and supplements - and worshiped many a brand and product sample. While we tried to stay true to our virtues, we got caught up in the sinful acts that can often transpire amongst the chaos of the trade show. As an act of self-penance, our is confessing their 7 Deadly Sins from Expo West - have mercy on our souls!
Thank you Kirsten S. 🌮
Another ****'n Expo recap❓ Everyone is sharing their Expo recaps and maybe that's tiring, but I actually love them, because we all go to these things with a different agenda & walk with different lenses on. Through others I've seen so much I didn't see while there and think "wow I missed half the show, but I saw SO much." Here are a few hits of my show. Maybe it'll be insightful to someone! 🍪What’s dough-ing on? While edible cookie dough isn’t a new idea, we continue to see innovative products come to market from snackable dough jars from brands like DEUX & Doughy to allergen free snackable dough bars from Whoa Dough, dough covered ice cream bites from Holi Scoops & Doughlicious and chilled ready to bake doughs from Sweet lorens and Woah Dough. These brands cover all the bases from sugar free to gluten free to vegan and everywhere in between. This category shows no signs of doughing down. (not sorry for that) 🫘 Lentils & Legumes While chickpeas have been hot for a few years, popping up in categories like pizza, cereal, yogurt and waffles, lentils are having a moment. From ready to eat lentil pots to hummus style lentil dips from Maazah Chutney and crispy lentil puffs from Siete Family Foods there was a lot to love from this little legume. Alongside this, brands such as A Dozen Cousins launched some really tasty new flavors of their bean pouches, which are a convenient way to build a nutritious meal, Brami Inc. is showing that beans can be a tasty snack and SIMPLi is leading the way with regenerative products like their delicious gigante beans. 🥭Whole Fruits & Veg for snacking Probably one of my favorite themes, straight up fruits & veg for snacking that is minimally processed with drying or freeze drying. Some highlights were THEO's Plant-Based sweet potato "jerky" and the Calbee America freeze dried grapes, alongside gorgeous rebrands from Solely Inc. & Pan's Mushroom Jerky and RIND Snacks ultra crave-able coconut chips and even some DTC apples! Lots of suppliers out there offering fruit & veg ingredients to innovate more in this space with. 🍝 Gluten free and good While not a new trend, gluten free has come a long way and there is definitely less of an enjoyment penalty. COYOTAS tortillas are next level good, Pasta Rummo hit it out of the park by sampling their gluten free pasta in cacio e pepe out of a giant parmigiana wheel and Sweet Loren's had some really good ready to bake cinnamon twists. Advances in ingredient R&D is definitely helping the category improve & evolve. Want to chat about brining new ideas to life? Or what your favorite finds at Expo were? You know where to find me. #innovation #productdevelopment #naturalfoods #expowest2024

Finally back home from SXSW - EXPO circuit and latest Snaxshot has all my observations! No, it's not your cringe "Trends I saw at EXPO" post lol, because if you need to go to EXPO to pick up on it, you're doing your job wrong! Here's a few fun observations from SXSW and EXPO: ⭐️Celebrity sightings abound: Simu Liu slinging dumplings at MILA booth is a testament that your investors, no matter the status, should be willing to put in the work! 💸The amount of VC money being lit on fire with these booths was palplable: you can actually correlate a big raise with bougie booths, and not that we mind, because thanks to these VC subsidies EXPO is looking more fashion week than trad industry event 🐄Bored Cow is pulling a Chobani with their latest yogurt: TAKING OVER MORE FRIDGE SPACE 🥤Restaurant to retail meets emerging brands: Beekeeper Coffee x Taco Bell as more emerging brands partner with legacy to test new concepts and flavor profiles 🫘Legumes reimagined: from beanless coffee using chickpeas via Voyage Foods to BRUTAL lupini puffs being a NEXTY finalist 🫒Squeeze-Me: Graza's influence was STRONG, from Momofuku new squeeze formats to spotting Graza bottles at cooking stations across expo. 🥣Best Behavior Cereal DOES NOT LOOK LIKE CEREAL!? AND MORE CURATION OF NEW BRANDS!
Thank you Fred Hart ! 🌮🌮🙌🙌
While there were many trends from this years #ExpoWest one of the biggest trends we saw was #Design. In an industry filled with incredible and scrappy entrepreneurs crafting amazing products, design is having its moment in natural products as a means of creating more immediate connection with consumers - be it a new brand creation or a redesign of an existing business. All of this incredible design made the show a creative's paradise, and our job to highlight the best all the harder. But we persevered and with the good folks from Dieline bring you 35 design highlights to feast your eyes on, calorie free. https://lnkd.in/dqt7wW9d Best Behavior Cereal Feel Good Foods Mixhers Impossible Foods Umaro Foods Munk Pack Chef Chew Something Better Foods, Inc Base Culture Bearded Brothers MingsBings Sun Noodle SkinnyDipped Bad Mouth Hoptonic Tea SemiPlume VUUM Technologies Milton's Craft Bakers Top Fox Snacks WholeMoon COYOTAS Brew Dr. Kombucha Health-Ade Ghetto Gastro Banán Harken Sweets Happypop!
