We spent the last two days at the inaugural Elevate2 Nonprofit Conference and are still buzzing with appreciation for this strong and supportive community of changemakers. “As Aristotle put it, to be excellent we cannot simply think or feel excellent, we must act excellently.” —Keynote Speaker, Shawn Achor Thank you First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania and Community Giving Foundation for all the work that went into hosting this event. #eatshare #northcentralpa #neighborshelpingneighbors #elevate2 First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania Community Giving Foundation

According to the United Nations, one-third of the world’s food is wasted. In the US, food waste is 40%—enough to feed 2 billion people. Yet, a recent food mapping study concluded that 1 in 8 Pennsylvanians in our own communities struggle to secure nutritious food. To address local food waste and insecurity, Eat Share has been exploring innovative ways to redistribute food to members of our communities. From this endeavor, we have developed Food Forward Donations. Our Food Forward initiative welcomes local restaurants, caterers, farmers, grocery stores and others to donate their excess food, rather than waste it. So far in 2024, Food Forward donations have provided meals to 29 appreciative families. Donations have included leftover prepared foods from events—like sandwiches, chicken, collard greens, pulled pork, mac and cheese, baked beans, and cookies—as well as frozen hams, pot roasts, and fresh garden veggies. Contact us anytime and Eat Share volunteers will collect your donations, package them into meals, and deliver locally. Last Saturday, we hosted our very first Pie Baking Contest—and like all things you do for the first time, we learned a few things along the way. Such as realizing after the fact that we didn’t capture any photos of our contestants with their beautiful pies. But that won’t stop us from shouting their praises! Six pie bakers competed for the Golden Spatula, honoring family traditions and testing out new techniques. Every pie was a delicious winner to us, but our judges had their hands (and mouths) full choosing the top contenders. 1st Place: Kim Croucher Bourbon Salted Caramel Choc Pecan Pie 2nd Place: Lori Stackhouse Rhubarb Pie Honorable Mentions: Cathy Simon Smoked Apple Bourbon Crumb Pie Katie Artley Cinnamon Swirl Apple Pie Devon Salvin Blueberry Pie Ellissa Temple Apple Pie with Today Farm Engraved Crust Additional shout out to our local celebrity judges, who had the best and hardest job of the day, enjoying delicious pies and awarding ultimate bragging rights. Thank you Jennifer Simpson from Koppers Inc, Benjamin McDuffee with Service 1st Federal Credit Union, Tony Bixby from Susquehanna Regional EMS, and Leeann Hessler with both UPMC and a beloved Eat Share board member. 📸 Kelly Ann M Photography #eatshare #northcentralpa #neighborshelpingneighbors

During our last community meal, several curious visitors asked our volunteers, “who is this for”….or “why are you doing this?”… “who gets meals?” First, we are happy that people are asking these questions and hope we continue to foster a comfortable environment that welcomes questions and understanding. Second, we are excited to share our values and mission as a nonprofit serving north central PA. Eat Share is a collection of volunteers spreading kindness through food sharing. That means we deliver warm meals to neighbors during tough times. It means we take groceries and fresh produce to those without. It means we rescue excess food from being wasted. And once in awhile, it means we host a meal that welcomes everyone in the community—from all walks of life, with all levels of income, both those feeling good and those struggling to get through the day, those who want to help and those who need a hand, EVERYONE—to come together and share a meal. We see the value in coming together and building meaningful connections, and so many fond memories are made around food. Everyone deserves to eat well and we strive to break the barriers that make that possible. So our meals are always free and we never ask which categories or little boxes you may identify with because it’s irrelevant. We are neighbors helping neighbors—sharing what we have and celebrating each other and our community. What a magical day on the farm on Saturday! The community continues to surprise us with every meal—the helpers, the donors, and each person who shows up to enjoy our events. 315 people were served, which is well over twice our previous record. We also hosted fire truck tours, face painting, tie dying, arts & crafts, and goat visits—all free to the community. We’ll share more soon but in the meantime, all we have is appreciation. Thank you 💚🩵🩷 #eatshare #northcentralpa #neighborshelpingneighbors
