Exciting times for ECE!
This week we had the momentous and exciting opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a new era for our Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and laser research. We officially broke ground on the new ATLAS building, which will house the nation's top laser research aimed at creating sustainable and reliable fusion energy. Carmen Menoni and Jorge Rocca, University Distinguished Professors and the masterminds behind laser research and industry connections that made this project possible, were joined by several esteemed guests, including U.S. Congressman Joe Neguse, Undersecretary for Science and Innovation for the U.S. Department of Energy Geri Richmond, and Chief Executive of Marvel Fusion, Moritz von der Linden, to celebrate the accomplishments and continued research that will occur at CSU thanks to this collaborative effort. CSU is proud to be at the forefront of the clean energy discovery and development of fusion energy. We are excited to see the world-changing research and educational opportunities that will emerge from this addition to our campus!

🌟 Historic day for CSU's ECE department! 🌟 Yesterday, we broke ground on our newly named ATLAS Facility (Advanced Technology Lasers for Applications and Science) at our Foothills Campus—a powerful new laser facility that will aid in fusion energy, medicine, fundamental science, and more. ✨ Slated to come online in mid-2026, the ATLAS Facility is the culmination of 40 years of laser development research at CSU in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and a strategic $150 million public-private partnership with Marvel Fusion that launched in 2023. 💡 CSU’s leadership in laser research is primarily due to work by our very own University Distinguished Professors Carmen S. Menoni and Jorge Rocca. The future of laser science is bright – and it starts here at CSU! 💥 Learn more about the new ATLAS facility in our bio: https://buff.ly/4f8ZfyM 🔗 #LaserResearch #FusionEnergy #Innovation #MarvelFusion #GroundbreakingScience

💥 How powerful is a high-power laser? 💥 Our petawatt-class laser system can generate extreme conditions like those found at the center of stars.🌟 For perspective, a petawatt is a quadrillion watts -- equivalent to the power of 10 TRILLION 100-watt light bulbs! 💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡 And it’s about to get even more intense. Our new laser facility will house an extraordinary cluster of high-power, high-repetition lasers. ⚡ These lasers have the potential to produce, for a brief amount of time, an astounding power of 6 PETAWATTS – that’s about 6,000 TIMES LARGER THAN THE POWER PRODUCED BY ALL POWER PLANTS IN THE U.S. COMBINED. 😮 ❗ ❗ Imagine the potential for cutting-edge research and clean energy breakthroughs? #LaserTech #CleanEnergy #NextGenScience

🌌 The universe runs on fusion: the release of energy when two atoms collide. Harnessed on earth, fusion could generate unlimited clean energy to power cities and industries.🌃 The ECE department boasts one of the few high-power, ultrashort pulse lasers in the world capable of reproducing the process of fusion. ⚡ We are leveraging our unique technology to advance this crucial carbon-free energy source. Beyond laser-driven fusion for clean energy, lasers are central to the development of innovative technologies for basic research, advanced manufacturing, defense, medicine, and more. 👩⚕️ Advanced lasers are also key to the fabrication of powerful computer chips -- an area in which CSU graduates have made key contributions. 📷 Photos 1 & 2: CSU's Advanced Laser For Extreme Photonics called ALEPH 📷 Photo 3: Credit: ASML, a global leader in the semiconductor industry, where CSU ECE graduates have made key contributions #fusion #lasers #cleanenergy #innovation
