We are thrilled to have our team members participating in this year's SWANA conference, including our CEO, Kevin Roche, who also serves as Secretary of SWANA. This event presents an excellent opportunity for learning and networking with esteemed professionals in the field!
🚨 Day 1 of WASTECON® in Grapevine, Texas is officially in the books, and what a day it was! We kicked things off with over 1,200 solid waste and resource management pros in attendance, diving into some incredible experiential learning opportunities! 🌎 From exploring sustainable infrastructure at the UTA Plastic Road project to touring the Republic Services Plano Recycling Center and Peterbilt Motors plant, attendees gained valuable insights. A sold-out crowd attended the Essential Leachate PFAS Training to tackle important environmental challenges, and the day wrapped up with a thought-provoking keynote by K. Scott Griffith (former Chief Safety Officer at American Airlines), followed by the announcement of the 2024 SWANA Safety Award winners. 🎉 The WASTECON Opening Reception in the Exhibit Hall closed out the night. 🥂 Let’s keep the momentum going! 🚀 #WASTECON2024 #SolidWaste #Sustainability #SafetyFirst #SWANA #wastecon #SustainableMaterialsManagement #SolidWasteManagement #WasteReduction #Recycling #Networking #GrapevineTX

Our Communications Director, Jamie Garvin, spent some time discussing the dangers of lithium ion batteries following the recent fire in Orrington, Maine. Check out the news story below for more information on how to safely dispose of these hazardous materials.
Talkin’ trash @ ecomaine ♻️ | Passionately promoting sustainable waste management as a means to a better future
⚠️ Don't throw rechargeable batteries in the trash! ⚠️ The recent fire at the Eagle Point Energy Center (formerly PERC) in Orrington, Maine, is a stark reminder of the risks to waste and recycling facilities. Most often, fires like these are sparked by damaged lithium-ion batteries, threatening facilities and workers. The prevalence of these events is rising due to the increasing use of batteries in everyday devices, with the National Waste & Recycling Association estimating more than 5,000 fires annually at U.S. recycling facilities are linked to lithium-ion batteries, resulting in millions of dollars in damage and considerable operational disruptions. We've seen this firsthand at ecomaine, thankfully avoiding any significant damage or injuries - or worse a complete catastrophic loss. I had the chance to sit down with the ARC Maine show on Sinclair Inc.'s local station group WGME CBS13 / WPFO FOX23 to help raise awareness about these dangers and provide some helpful resources for folks about how to dispose of lithium-ion batteries safely. 🚫 Never toss rechargeable batteries in household trash or curbside recycling. 🔗 Use designated drop-off locations for safe disposal. (Call2Recycle, Inc.) 📢 Spread the word to keep our communities safe! Thanks Stephanie Grindley and Jeff Peterson for the great conversation, and Thomas O'Boyle, Amanda Post, and team for producing. https://lnkd.in/ekBRK79A #RecycleRight #BatterySafety #WasteManagement 🔋🔥♻️
