Revolutionizing Green Energy: DGIST’s 3D Smart Energy Device for Radiant Cooling and Solar Absorption Heating and cooling account for nearly half of global energy use, a major driver of environmental issues. To address this, researchers from DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Korea University have developed a 3D Smart Energy Device that offers both heating and cooling in a single system. Their breakthrough, featured on the cover of Advanced Materials, combines efficiency with versatility, a step toward sustainable energy solutions. The device operates via a unique mechanism: by peeling open, it reveals a silicone elastomer and silver layer for cooling; when closed, its black-painted surface absorbs solar heat to warm up. This allows it to adjust heating or cooling outputs on a variety of surfaces, from glass and steel to skin. With potential applications in building systems and electronics, this device represents a leap forward in adaptable, eco-friendly energy solutions. Professor Bonghoon Kim and his team aim to see it widely used to lower energy demands and support global sustainability. This research was supported by Korea’s National Research Foundation through ERC and Nano Technology projects.
