Environmental Consulting Specializing in Municipal Odor and Corrosion Control

A recent Hartwell Environmental Corp newsletter featured an ECS Odor Control system that we are rather proud of. This project involved utilizing an ECS VaporPac trailer-mounted APC unit to determine the optimum location and ventilation rate. This data is critical when trying to optimize odor capture and maximize the zone of influence. During the test we were also able to determine actual sulfide / odor loading. Absent this diligence, collection system odor control design is problematic.  Often you’re throwing a dart, blind-folded. We ended up with a unit installed in a popular park area treating very high loading.    Imagine having families sit in bleachers feet away from your odor control unit!   A few notable highlights of this installation; ·       Unique primary stage bioreactor utilizing ECS BioPac media. After a short acclimation period this front stage is removing better than 99% of the corrosive / dangerous Hydrogen Sulfide gas, and enough organic reduced sulfur compounds to achieve >99.5% total odor removal. ·      Forward, besides power to run the fan, a little water and some dry nutrient – this unit will be problem free.  Had this been a dry media installation the client would have been changing their carbon or oxidant every 6 months or less.  (note, some vendors might just upsize the media bed and while that may extend time between service, cost are linear). ·      Secondary carbon polishing stage – this was utilized to treat odor during acclimation of the bioreactor and is no longer necessary.   This stage can now be used when needed for emergencies. ·      Accurate location of the exhaust fan… We placed our fan between the bio and carbon stages and added a bypass stack to exhaust direct to atmosphere.  Placing the fan in front of a carbon stage is quite important...   ·      We installed a high-efficiency grease trap in front of the biological stage to clean the airstream before it entered the unit. ·      This unit had a very low-profile design, hiding behind a privacy fence.  That can create some unique challenges in the biological stage – all managed with our design.  After almost 30 years in the industry, coming up with “best in class” custom solutions for challenging applications like this really keeps me engaged!

Environmental Consulting Specializing in Municipal Odor and Corrosion Control

I spent the last three weeks of the year helping our field service division modernize a >20 year old ECS system. We are drawing air from the collection system, treating very high levels of hydrogen sulfide and other organic reduced sulfur compounds. An ECS Bioreactor will knock out the H2S and achieve very good overall general odor removal. But due to the extreme sensitivity of this install we’ve added a robust dry media absorption / oxidation reactor to polish anything left. (Ducted die bypass) As much as I dislike using moisture sensitive oxidation media, we chose to do it in this application with a dual-media VX radial unit. Air from the Bio unit will first pass through a bed of carbon… that will do the heavy lifting (and frankly may be enough)…. Just to be sure we back that up with a bed of ECS oxidation media. Belt, suspenders and then some. ECS used one of our Mobile V-bank units to treat odor during demo/construction. V-Bank dry media units have beds similar to the Radial system (vertical bed, horizontal airflow). But instead of a round three dimensional bed, they are flat and only two dimensional. A Nice solution when you have a long / narrow space and want something shorter. Perfect geometry for a mobile (shippable) system! Over these three weeks I ran conduit, loaded media, ran plumbing, drove a lift, did fiberglass work and made a few dozen trips to Home Depot. I think participating in the actual “hands on experience execution process” has helped ECS the stand-out leader in municipal and industrial Air Polluton. 2024, let’s GO! #vbank #odorcontrol #airpollutioncontrol #biofilter #carbonadsorber #leadingfromthefront
