As a researcher focused on the endocannabinoid system (ECS), I find Dr. Robert Lustig's post on the need for better nutrition education in medical schools particularly relevant. The ECS plays a crucial role in metabolism and energy balance, yet it's completely overlooked in traditional medical curricula. Just as doctors need to 'unlearn' outdated nutritional concepts, there's a pressing need to incorporate ECS education into medical training. The ECS is a dietary fat-derived regulatory system that intimately interacts with our nutritional intake and metabolic processes, influencing everything from appetite regulation to lipid- and glucose metabolism. The precursors to endocannabinoids are Omega-6 fatty acids which we eat WAY too much of, leading to an imbalanced ECS and increased risk of metabolic disorders. The initiative to establish 354 core competencies in nutrition for healthcare providers is a step in the right direction. However, we should also push for including fundamental ECS concepts in the curriculum. Understanding the ECS provides doctors with a more holistic view of how nutrition impacts our body's homeostasis. What are your thoughts on integrating ECS education alongside nutrition in medical training? Could this dual approach help address the 'nutritional mess' Dr. Lustig mentions? #Nutrition #ECSEducation

Doctors need to UNLEARN nutrition, so I said in Chapter 3 of my book Metabolical. In fact, only 28% of medical schools even have a rudimentary nutrition curriculum. I suppose you can't unlearn something you never knew... Well, someone decided to do something about it. Courtesy of a grant from the Vitamix Foundation, a consortium of 37 academics have published a set of 354 core competencies in nutrition that all healthcare providers should know. The only way to teach this is in medical school and through CME. Maybe once doctors are on board, we can fix this nutritional mess we've created.

Did you know that the psychedelic drug LSD influences not just our brain, but also our body's extended endocannabinoid system? Recent preclinical research is shedding light on unexpected physiological effects of LSD, revealing its role as an eCBome modulator. Key findings: • LSD alters hippocampal (but not cortical) eCBome composition, affecting crucial signaling molecules. • It modulates gut microbiome diversity and composition. • These changes may contribute to LSD's mind-altering effects through complex gut-brain interactions. This infographic summarizes the groundbreaking research by Inserra et al. (2023), exploring how LSD impacts our body's intricate physiological networks. It's a fascinating glimpse into the complex interconnectedness of serotonergic psychedelics, the endocannabinoid system, and our gut microbiome. What are your thoughts on these findings? How might this research influence our approach to mental health and neuroscience? #Neuroscience #Psychedelics #LSD #ECSEducation #eCBome #ECS #GutBrainAxis

🔬 New Research Alert: Prebiotics, Probiotics, and the ECS 🌿Exciting developments in metabolic health research! Our latest blog post dives into how prebiotics like inulin and synbiotics modulate the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and gut microbiota. Key highlights: • Synbiotic interventions significantly alter CB1 and CB2 receptor expression. • Dramatic changes in gut microbiota composition (F/B ratio) with prebiotic/probiotic use. • Strong correlations between ECS activity and metabolic health markers. This research opens new avenues for treating obesity, NAFLD, and cardiovascular disorders through the gut-brain-ECS axis. Could personalized nutrition strategies leveraging the ECS be the future of metabolic health?
