Improving the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina

About us

We come to work every day in order to help you and the 1.4 million people like you across eastern North Carolina. In the face of a rapidly changing health care landscape — increasing competition, advancing technologies and a host of other external pressures — many health care systems lose sight of what’s important. Not ECU Health. Even as we grow, we know that progress isn’t just about moving forward. It’s about how we move forward. That’s why we’ve always been, and always will be, a mission-driven health care system. Our mission, vision and values continue to lead us on a voyage to excellence. Because the people we take care of — our neighbors, friends and family — deserve the best.

When Jalen Hill, a medical laboratory technician with ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, joined the system as a cook in March of 2021 and believed his future would take him to culinary school and a career as a chef. However, he quickly found himself more interest in the patient care side of being in a hospital. "Someone in HR heard me talk about wanting to do something different," he said. "I was considering going into radiology, and I thought I could train in phlebotomy and then transfer into a radiology program; but then the person in HR talked to me about the medical laboratory technician (MLT) role, which I had never even heard about. She was the one who set me up with the lab to do some job shadowing, and that was the spark.” Hear from Jalen and read more about his story: https://lnkd.in/eMM2MXw9

ECU Health Chief of Pediatric Nephrology Dr. Liliana Gomez recently sat down with WNCT to discuss growing up in Mexico City, her move to the United States for undergraduate and medical school and her experience as a physician in eastern North Carolina. “I think it helps when the patient population can see that there’s people like them that look like them, that are giving their care,” she said. “It also helps that I speak fluent Spanish and it helps connect to our Hispanic patients a lot quicker.” Hear more from Dr. Gomez: https://lnkd.in/d5MNRWfi
