Many organizations invest millions in digital transformation initiatives but fail to see results because they focus on a specific technology rather than a mindset. Without DeviceOps, connected products may as well be a patchwork of components with connectivity thrown in. Read our ebook on DeviceOps to learn how you can adopt this architecture and mindset to overcome device management challenges and accelerate digital transformation: https://lnkd.in/ep_XYj7g #deviceops #devicemanagement #aws #awsiot #iotplatform #digitaltransformation #connectedproducts #connecteddevices

Unpacking Scalability Challenges in Your Device Operations Dozens of survey respondents at Connected Product companies called out Scalability as a major blocker in their business. The Many Dimensions of Scalability When unpacking blockers to scale, product and field service leaders list much more than the volume of devices, amount of data or executing automation processes like software updates and configuration changes. • Back-end Horsepower - The obvious challenges of scale relate to how your back-end systems can handle millions of transactions per minute—or even per second. • UI/UX - On the front end, the scale challenge lies in visualizing and interacting with tens, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of devices. • Multi-tier Account Hierarchy - Managing roles and access for hundreds or even thousands of accounts and sub-accounts, with dozens to hundreds of users per account. • Device Profile Complexity - Segmenting devices by unique profiles and automating processes based on those profiles. • Asynchronous Process Management - Processes like software updates and configuration changes must be tested and then deployed across different cohorts, with built-in observability and event triggers. Architecting and Planning for Scale The right mindset, architecture and implementation models will prevent bottlenecks, outages or even worse outcomes. Some keys to preventing problems and crushing your operational and customer goals: 1) Design with abstraction in mind. Do not build Device Operations into specific device firmware or back-end applications. All DeviceOps processes should be abstracted from device software and application software. 2) Think in terms of Workflows, not Features. Workflows are, by definition, abstracted from specific software and hardware endpoints. They automate complex processes and are designed for simplicity—often through drag-and-drop interfaces. 3) API-first. Keeping with the abstraction and workflow themes - you must provide a way for other systems and services to interact with your devices and processes. 4) Best of Breed. Scaling becomes more challenging if the processes or systems you implement are not built by experts in that domain. Organizations should focus on what makes their products unique and valuable. The Observability Gap in IoT: Insights from 350+ Industry Leaders In our recent survey of over 350 connected product leaders, 16% of respondents identified a lack of observability into success or failure of their actions as a major pain point in their IoT operations. That lack of observability has far-reaching impacts, leading to: • Difficulty in identifying and resolving issues promptly • Lack of ability to optimize performance across device fleets • Reactive versus proactive responses to issue resolution • Limited insights into user experience and product adoption • Obstacles to demonstrating ROI of IoT deployments So what can those in the Connected Product space do to bridge the observability gap? Look for solutions that: 1) Provide real-time monitoring and alerting capabilities 2) Offer comprehensive dashboards for device health and performance 3) Enable detailed event logging and analysis 4) Support predictive maintenance by routing the right data to the right analytics tools 5) Integrate easily with existing monitoring tools To win in the Connected Product Economy, robust observability isn't just a nice-to-have—it's a must-have for ensuring reliability, driving continuous improvement, and proving business value.
