Today, we continue our "Spotlight" series at Central Electric Power Cooperative. We are excited to spotlight Central's Board Vice-Chair, Douglas A. “Doug” Reeves. Douglas embodies an invaluable asset to Central Electric's Board of Directors, having contributed his expertise since 2004. He is Chairman of the Board at Edisto Electric Cooperative, Inc. (https://lnkd.in/gPdZzwMW) and has over 37 years of dedicated involvement in the poultry industry alongside his brother, J.C. Reeves, Jr. As we spotlight Douglas' community service, it is no coincidence that today is also "South Carolina Rosenwald School Day.” Douglas has played a pivotal role in fundraising initiatives and the restoration of Rosenwald Schools in rural South Carolina. In the segregated South, educational opportunities for African Americans were severely lacking. Contributions to what was known as the Rosenwald Fund helped to construct schools, teachers' homes, and vocational buildings throughout the South during this time. These schools historically served as vital hubs within countless small communities; in addition to their educational priority, the locations hosted various events, from plays to religious services. Sadly, out of the 500 originally constructed Rosenwald Schools, a mere 36 remain. In the town of St. George, a Rosenwald School lay abandoned for nearly half a century. This particular Rosenwald School was one of the largest and most unique of its kind. It operated for almost 30 years and then became a community events center before being abandoned and falling into disrepair. In 2015, Douglas, alongside other impassioned community leaders, spearheaded efforts to preserve it. In 2021, the St. George Rosenwald School earned recognition as part of the African American Civil Rights Network. Continuing his commitment, Douglas serves as the Vice Chairman of the St. George Rosenwald School Board of Directors. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster honored him with the prestigious Order of the Palmetto in August of 2023.
