Pregnancy isn’t just a medical event. It’s a life-changing journey that takes emotional, physical, and mental support. Here's a startling statistic: over half of U.S. families feel unprepared for childbirth. In this KOMO News segment, our CEO and co-founder Bettina Paek, MD, MBA and childbirth educator Kate Dewey, CD talked about how doulas bring expert care and emotional support to expectant families—from preparation to birth and beyond. With platforms like eDoula, parents gain real-time access to essential guidance, tools, and support when it’s needed most. Key takeaway: The B-R-A-I-N framework (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, trust your Intuition, and doing Nothing) equips families to make confident, informed decisions and feel empowered every step of the way. Our Founder and CEO Bettina Paek, MD, MBA had the opportunity to participate in an inspiring FemTech and Entrepreneurship panel October 10 at Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship on the University of Washington campus alongside other innovative leaders in the women's health space. The panel brought together brilliant minds including Mary Fenske, CEO of Posture Wings, SteelSky Ventures Principal Georgia Cavanaugh , Stephiney Foley, CEO and founder of Yuzi, biochem innovator Nikhita Vaddineni and more to discuss the challenges and opportunities in femtech. Discussions like these help to drive meaningful advancements in women's healthcare. By continuing to shine a light on the hurdles AND the possibilities, we can work together as a community to accelerate progress and improve health outcomes. Thank you to Winona Kantamaneni, MPA - this was such an impactful gathering! And to all the passionate students who attended. Your interest and engagement give us great optimism for the future! We look forward to continued collaborations to empower female innovators and promote women's health and access. We had such a great group of speakers on campus yesterday to share their experiences as innovators in women's health and femtech - across digital doula support, post-partum care, breast tissue and posture support, and bridging the gender disparity in CPR, these women are pursuing work that improves women's lives and health. There is so much opportunity in this space, and much of that opportunity is due to a huge lack in research and funding for women's health. The conversation ranged from the personal side, policy and advocacy needs alongside innovation, and the astronomic highs and lows faced by entrepreneurs. Some of my takeaways, with major thanks to these women for sharing their time and wisdom with us: 👙 Women's bodies are taboo, and rooms of investors are usually primarily filled with men who aren't always comfortable being handed a prototype of something like a bra - Mary Fenske 🤝 Local and federal government policies are an important part of providing funding and institutional guardrails to improve women's health - Stephiney Foley 📋 Innovation in this space can be complicated by many systemic issues - for example, healthcare for women is reimbursed at a lower rate than analogous healthcare in men. Bettina Paek, MD, MBA 💡 Finding mentors has been a critical piece of this process. There is a lot to learn, and it helps to talk to someone about your questions, and also about the wins along the way. Nikhita Vaddineni 📣 Venture capital is a form of investment that can be helpful, but it isn't right for every business or entrepreneur. Just like a job interview, you are assessing whether an investor is right for you as much as they are assessing your opportunity. Georgia Cavanaugh
