How Job Corps Changed My Life, by Yvette DeLuise, BSN, RN My nursing career began in 2010 when I earned my Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification from Oneonta Job Corps Academy. Following my certification, I was employed as a CNA at Oneonta Fox Nursing Home, where I dedicated seven years to patient care. After five years in this role, I sought to advance my career and subsequently enrolled in SUNY Delhi’s Dual Degree Nursing Program. This program allowed me to take both associate and baccalaureate courses simultaneously, enabling me to complete my degree a semester early. During my time at SUNY Delhi, I worked full-time as a CNA and went to school fulltime, graduating cum laude with my Associate in Nursing in May 2018. I took my nursing boards in July 2018 and obtained my nursing license. In August 2018, I embarked on my first role as a Registered Nurse (RN) at UHS Binghamton General Hospital, where I worked in the Transitional Care Unit. While there, I joined the wound care team and became a Wound/Ostomy Care Associate (WOCA). A year later, in January 2019, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from SUNY Delhi and later transferred to a medical-surgical floor to expand my clinical expertise. I remained with UHS for three years until October 2021, when I joined Corporate Care Management as a telephonic case manager, focusing on insurance authorizations and nursing education. After three years in this role, I was promoted in July 2024 to Supervisor of Utilization Management, where I now lead a team of nurses and intake staff. We perform case management for many different states, and I now have a nursing license in New York, Kentucky, and Indiana, and soon will be registered in Utah and Louisiana. Reflecting on my journey, I recognize now that it took significant dedication and commitment to reach my current position. I am especially grateful to the Oneonta Job Corps Academy’s CNA program, which first introduced me to the healthcare field and provided the foundational skills that have been instrumental in my career progression. #jobcorps #careersbeginhere #JobCorpsJourney #thenationaljobcorpsassociation #studentsuccess #nurse
