The Biden administration is actively pursuing broad student loan forgiveness for borrowers. However, its initial effort under the HEROES Act was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2023. In response to that ruling, President Biden vowed to persist in his efforts to provide debt relief to millions of borrowers. The Department has announced a phased release for the 2025-2026 FAFSA, their Free Application for Federal Student Aid. There are still several issues that are being managed from the 2024-2025 release. However, their hope is ability to launch a functional form, and they’re giving themselves a phased approach.
