In 2023, the number of opioid overdose deaths in the US decreased for the first time since 2018 (CDC). While this news should be celebrated, Opioid Use Disorder still impacts over 2 million Americans. We’re hopeful that the combined efforts of treatment centers around the country can assist in bringing that number down so we can see a decrease every year to come. Education is one of the biggest hurdles when it comes to the effective and widespread use of Naloxone (Narcan), an FDA-approved medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. For example, even though 33 states authorize schools and universities to stock Narcan, only the adult staff are trained in its usage. If students are even aware that Narcan is available on campus, they have no idea how to properly administer emergency treatment. The time it takes to find someone with proper training could be the difference between life and death. “I think I’m a pretty good driver, but I still wear a seatbelt. This health group in Ohio is expanding its mobile needle exchange program to the west side of Columbus to combat rising overdose deaths. How does a needle exchange work? Programs like this provide clean syringes to drug users, helping prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C. Users are required to return an old syringe to receive a new one, giving the staff an opportunity to offer addiction services. We know what you’re thinking — "Don’t programs like this promote drug use and needle litter?" But research shows that these programs decrease community harm and increase treatment engagement.
