“Ready” means “fully prepared.” We should never assert that we are “ready” for something as powerful as wildfire, and pretending that we are induces complacency. The truth of readiness is determined in the aftermath of an event. There is so much more that we can do, and there always will be. Within days, fire conditions will be as condusive as they were when this started. This is not a time to project confidence. It’s a time to acknowledge our unpreparedness and do something about it. Home hardening, evacuation route hardening, fuel treatment, fire breaks, suppression technology, realistic cluster- fk evacuation modelling, water supply, retardant application, assets that won’t be grounded by wind when they are most needed, all done with urgency. We haven’t learned our lesson, because this is just the beginning. Let’s get our act together, together. If you want to point fingers, point them at a problem that you plan to fix, and get after it. Fire is not tamed by outrage, but managed by applying the laws of physics that govern it. I have many great memories during my time with U.S. Fire Administration that I will share in the coming days. I appreciate FEMA External Affairs for creating a collage of special photos. #HurricaneIAN #HurricaneHelene, #HurricaneMilton, #LahainaFire, United States – Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), fire station visits accross the nation, and a remembrance of President Carter.

Between 2016 and 2020 wildfires caused by electric utilities accounted for 19% of the acres burned in California. Power lines also cause the Maui fire of 2023, which killed 102 people. The Smokehouse Creek Fire was caused by power lines of Xcel Energy. But updating a #WMP doesn't need to be expensive or difficult - quarterly maps showing wildfire "landmines" from Athena look forward 12 months and are updated quarterly. The text for WMPs don't change much over the years, it is the maps that show the risk, the burn scars, the vegetation and the impact to property insurance. Set an appointment to get a demonstration for your municipality, coop or community aggregator.

The Importance of Proper Braking Techniques on Ice How you brake on ice makes a big difference in winter driving. Let’s talk about proper braking techniques. On icy surfaces, you want to avoid hard braking which can lock your wheels and cause a skid. Instead, use gentle and gradual pressure to your brakes. If your wheels do lock and you begin to skid, ease off your brake and regain control of your steering. Practice this technique to develop the habit of gentle braking. What braking techniques have you found effective in the snow? #BrakingTechniques #IcyRoads #WinterDriving #SafeDriving #SkidControl
