Attending #Greenbuild2024? Join EHDD Principal Brad Jacobson, FAIA, along with David Lehrer with University of California, Berkeley, Claire Maxfield with Atelier Ten, and Don Davies with Davis-Crooks Associates to discuss what sustainability leaders need to do today for the entire industry to get to zero embodied carbon by 2050. A stable climate demands that buildings radically reduce their carbon footprint and move toward carbon neutrality by 2050. Electrification, advancements in efficient decarbonized building systems, and an accelerating clean grid put zero operational carbon within sight. Meanwhile, the path to zero embodied carbon is harder to see. Is zero embodied carbon possible today? This structured discussion will identify legitimate pathways toward radical embodied carbon reduction on projects now, and will explore other major sources of carbon emissions that must be tackled to truly bring us to a zero-emissions built environment. Join us for "We can't wait until 2050: Reaching Zero Embodied Carbon Today" 📅 Wednesday, November 13, 2024 ⏲️ 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (ET) 📍 103C (1st Floor) Full conference schedule: https://lnkd.in/gzBc9nd8

This month, join us in celebrating the 40th year of the Monterey Bay Aquarium! 🌊 🦦 🦀 🐠 As one of the first of its kind, the Monterey Bay Aquarium departed from traditional aquarium design by focusing on the unique marine ecology of one habitat: the Monterey Bay and its shoreline. Built over land and water, it embraces views of the Bay—the ecosystem it celebrates. The aquarium sits sensitively among the existing sardine processing plants and cannery buildings, utilizing the foundations—and rekindling the spirit—of the old Hovden Cannery. Since the original building opened in 1984, our firm has had the opportunity to continue supporting the mission and vision of the Monterey Bay Aquarium with projects including the Penguins exhibit; the Into the Deep exhibit, which showcases unusual deep sea animals and environments and highlights continuing research; and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Holding Facility, an off-site husbandry holding facility. The Monterey Bay Aquarium has been lauded by architects, conservationists, and aquarium communities, alike. The aquarium and its many expansions have been recognized with the 1988 National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects; the 1988 Honor Award from AIA Monterey Bay; the 1987 Top Honor Award, Current Project Waterfront Center Excellence on the Water; and the 1985 Honor Award AIA California Council. In a testament to the longevity of the aquarium's design and impact, it was awarded with the AIA 25-Year Honor Award in 2016. Explore the project on our website 👇 https://lnkd.in/g6NafsrU

This month, EHDD founder and architect Charles "Chuck" Davis will be a featured speaker at AIA California's Monterey Design Conference. In 1962, Chuck, alongside architectural pioneers Joe Esherick, George Homsey, and Peter Dodge, founded EHDD, which began as a residential design studio and evolved to define the iconic Northern California architectural style. His contributions have significantly shaped California's academic infrastructure, with major projects at all ten University of California campuses. Chuck has also designed acclaimed aquariums worldwide, including the Florida Aquarium, National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium of Taiwan, and The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. In 2003, Chuck was individually honored with the Maybeck Award for his outstanding achievements in architectural design. Learn more about some of Chuck’s outstanding work, including the beloved, award-winning Monterey Bay Aquarium, in an interview hosted by Pierluigi Serraino AIA. Join us for “Reflections with Chuck Davis, FAIA | Interview by Pierluigi Serraino, FAIA” 📅 Saturday, October 26, 2024 ⏲️ 2:15 PM - 3:15 PM (PDT) 📍 Merrill Hall + Chapel Session details: https://lnkd.in/gGTKK6jq Full conference information: https://lnkd.in/gdHQVYBN

Say hi to Brad Jacobson, FAIA at Monterey Design Conference this week and get schooled on Whole Life Carbon on Friday! Then, on Saturday, don't miss Charles Davis interviewed by Pierluigi Serraino AIA at 2:15pm. Finally, on Sunday a group will visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium on a special, behind-the-scenes tour.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been to the AIA California Monterey Design Conference (MDC) at Asilomar. I’m looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues and the great discussions that come from compressing a bunch of architects in a beautiful place for three full days. If you are attending, I encourage you to come to my Friday, 25 Oct 12:45-1:45pm session: " Zero Carbon Design: What Really Matters and How to Get There". Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gDqs7NpR ... or on the conference app, if you are already registered. It qualifies for 1 AIA HSW LU as well as the new-ish ZNCD mandatory CE credit. Description: New online tools allow architects to set “whole life carbon” reduction goals and explore strategies at the beginning of a project when data is scarce but the potential for carbon emissions reduction is high. This session reviews how architects can use these tools during pre-design to chart a course to decarbonization, present the most impactful low-carbon design strategies to clients, and carry these strategies through the project life cycle.

EHDD graphics specialist Eilish Cullen dives into the iterative design process for façade frit patterns for the The American Institute of Architects (AIA)'s Headquarters Renewal project in Washington, D.C. 📍 "Before becoming a graphics specialist in architecture, I honed an art practice that reimagined place through sound, visuals, and installations... a creative foundation that, today, shapes my practice at EHDD in profound ways," Cullen writes. This project married Cullen's creative approach with the primary focus of meeting AIA's ambitious building performance goals 💡 In this #Perspectives post, Cullen pulls back the curtain on the iterative design process for the frit patterns for America's home for architects ⤵ https://lnkd.in/gMKvg36p
