About us

Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP) is a nonprofit, federally funded workforce development organization headquartered in Hazard, Kentucky. EKCEP serves a population of nearly one-half million in 23 Appalachian counties with a mission of preparing, advancing, and expanding the workforce of Eastern Kentucky. EKCEP was formed in 1968 to meet the job training needs of Eastern Kentuckians in counties of high unemployment and acute poverty. EKCEP operates today under the auspices of the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). EKCEP’s current service model highlights its expert career advisors throughout the region in such a way as to create new avenues to access the workforce system and help people better navigate hurdles necessary to get a job, a better job, or launch a targeted career. EKCEP's Teleworks USA initiative diversifies employment opportunities by helping the citizens enter the global work-from-home job market. The service connects job seekers with information and job listings for work-from-home job opportunities, and also employs career advising tactics to prepare them to apply for and compete for those jobs. EKCEP's Employer Services help the region's businesses screen potential employees and streamline numerous human resources processes so employers can focus on the business of doing business.

Yesterday was a huge success! The First Annual Northeast KY Second Chance Employer & Community Resource Fair took place at the historic Ashland Train Depot. This event went a long way toward fostering growth and opportunity in our community. Did you know that individuals with criminal records who find employment are 43% less likely to re-offend? That's one of the many reasons we're so passionate about helping individuals get back to work! A special shoutout to EKCEP's Job Entry & Retention Support Specialists, Jacob Sartin and Bridget James, for their hard work in making second chances more accessible to our community! We've had a great time this week in Hazard meeting with our nine Community Action contractor partners and working on best practices to ensure that we're offering the best possible services for our workforce clients throughout Eastern Kentucky. At EKCEP, we're committed to our mission of preparing, advancing, and expanding our region's workforce. It's something that we could not do without our partners and their dedication to the thousands of clients they assist every year. At EKCEP, we believe that every person deserves a chance to build a better future, and we know that meaningful employment is a critical factor in reducing recidivism. That’s why we’ve partnered with Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and the Knox County Detention Center to offer valuable training programs for incarcerated individuals in Knox County. Participants are gaining hands-on skills like welding and peer support—tools they can use to secure stable jobs once they’re released. These skills will not only increase their employability but also help them build a new path forward, creating a positive cycle for their futures. Studies show that employment is one of the strongest predictors of successful reentry into society, and we’re proud to be part of that solution. Check out the video to see how we’re making a difference in the lives of those working hard to reclaim their future.

Great video from our friends at Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative! We spied our own Training Coordinator Dottie Nolan, along with Brittany Combs, Big Sandy Area Community Action Program Career Development Specialist for our Prosper Appalachia initiative. KVEC's annual Transition Conference is a great illustrator of the spirit of collaboration in Eastern Kentucky, and we were excited to participate. Dottie worked with students during the conference as she delivered soft skills training via our Work Ethics program, while Brittany shared information about career exploration services available to seniors through Prosper Appalachia. https://lnkd.in/gqWfiTEX
