Due to extreme weather conditions in July, Pacific Gas and Electric Company anticipated a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) that would impact 30 circuits and over 16,000 customers. PSPS events are a powerful strategy to protect communities during severe weather, but they should be a last resort. PG&E and EKN Engineering were able to leverage recent clearance assessment and historical load data to decrease PSPS event scope by 99.6%, reducing the required engineering reviews from 1,083 spans to 4. This allowed for quick, targeted inspections, eliminating customer outages entirely. How are you using data to enhance grid resilience? #Utility #GridReliability #Data #Innovation #Energy #Engineering

Amir Sabri, PhD, P.E. , Project Manager and Engineer at EKN Engineering, recently presented his research on the “Seismic Retrofit of Load Bearing URM Walls” at the World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE2024) in Milan, Italy. He presented with his mentor, Murat Saatcioglu , who specializes in reinforced concrete structures. Since joining EKN in August 2022, Amir has been critical to the success of projects within our Utility Engineering practice. Participation at WCEE 2024 provided him with the opportunity to engage with other experts in seismic engineering, a field of particular importance in California, further expanding his technical knowledge in seismic retrofitting and resilience. Amir's achievements, along with those of our team at EKN, are what enable us to consistently deliver innovative engineering solutions and drive our success.
