About us
At Electro Static Technology we love a good challenge. Problems with motor bearing damage led us to develop the patented solutions used in the AEGIS Shaft Grounding Rings used by industry leading manufacturers across the globe. Time constraints and customer schedules were the catalysts to building a team that responds quickly and can deliver most products within 24 hours. And the growing demand for dependable electric motors and generators continues to push us forward so we can serve an expanding variety of applications without sacrificing the reliability we are known for. Whether you are trying to prevent bearing failure, reduce the risk of VFD-sources shaft voltages, or simply want to learn more about bearing protection best practices, our team is here to help.

EMS Grand Rapids posted this simple, but powerful, definition. With it, you can simply estimate your expected cost due to failure for a machine over its lifetime: With reliability (as defined) = R, cost of failure = (1 - R) x (cost to repair/replace + cost of downtime x time to repair/replace)* You can compare this expected cost with the up-front and lifetime costs (if any)** of mitigating measures and make an informed decision on whether to take those measures. For example, an AEGIS ring for a motor on a drive might cost a few hundred dollars. How does that compare to the expected cost of motor bearing failure due to electrical damage? *This equation assumes the equipment fails at most once over its lifetime... not always the case! So it is a lower limit. At R = 0.95, there is ~ 0.1% risk of repeated failures; at R = 0.9, the risk is over 1%. To continue the example of motors on drives, estimates of failure rates due to electrical bearing damage range from 20% up to 50%, giving R = 0.8 at most, even neglecting other failure modes. **To be more rigorous, you would also calculate R with the mitigating measures in place, and add the expected cost of failure with mitigation to the up-front and lifetime costs of mitigation. The lifetime costs can include maintenance to the mitigation (like adjusting carbon brushes) and increased power consumption (due, for example, to voltage drop caused by VFD output filters).
Reliability is the probability an item will function correctly when needed, for the period required, in the specified environment. Are you getting the most out of your industrial equipment? We've got you covered. #TEAMEMS

"Variable Speed Drive" and "Variable Frequency Drive" are often used interchangeably, but that's not quite right. The Hydraulic Institute clarifies below.

Electro Static Technology (AEGIS® Shaft Grounding Ring), an ITW Company reposted this
Bearing failure is the number one cause of unplanned motor downtime and grounding rings can prevent premature wear and electrical damage. Selecting the correct grounding ring size is essential to ensure the conductive microfibers have proper contact with the motor shaft. Size your grounding ring based on your motor shaft diameter. Here's another great video on electrical bearing protection for motors on VFDs, from eMotors Direct Inc.
If you’re using VFDs to control your motors, you might already be aware of the risks associated with electrical discharge. AEGIS Grounding Rings are engineered to prevent this, significantly extending the life of your motor bearings by shielding them from harmful electrical currents. VFDs can damage motor bearings through high-frequency voltage spikes and induced shaft currents. You may notice crater-like depressions or surface defects on your bearing surface when you control your motors with a VFD. Poor grounding and shielding can exacerbate these issues, leading to premature bearing failure. To mitigate damage and prolong the life of your motor, consider using bearing insulation, proper grounding, and shaft grounding rings.
