IUEC-affiliate TK Elevator’s installations toward this dual-tower project include 10 escalators and 49 elevators (to date), with 44 additional elevator installations still to come. In addition, TK Elevator will continue to provide service to elevators and escalators at both properties. 🏆 Thanks, in part, to the IUEC Local 50 mechanics from TK Elevator and their contributions, these projects at CIBC SQUARE – highlighted by access to fine art, nature, and other nearby attractions – won “Development of the Year” at the 2022 REX awards.

🪖👷 The first International Union of Elevator Constructors Veterans Assistance Program (IUEC-VAP) Summit was held October 2-3, 2024, at the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) Instructor Training Center in Warwick, RI. Led by IUEC-VAP National Chairman Jason Gray (IUEC) via video, along with IUEC-VAP National Co-Chairman Ryan Donnell (EIWPF), Ben Valinsky (NEIEP), IUEC-VAP National Director of Programs and Education, and Jeff Handibode (NEIEP), IUEC-VAP National Claims and Disabilities Liaison, the two-day event was moderated by Elizabeth Belcaster, a consultant to the program who brings extensive experience in Veterans training and work programs for governmental, nonprofit, and labor organizations. ✅ It featured presentations and panel discussions by honored guest speakers, a tour of the NEIEP Instructor Training Center, and question and answer sessions where attendees could interact with panelists for deeper discussions and feedback on the topics that were covered throughout the day. Changes to ASME code regulations for elevators are coming to New York - currently, all newly installed or newly modernized traction elevators are required to be equipped with rope grippers. As of January 1, 2027, this requirement will extend to existing traction elevators. IUEC-affiliated Metro Elevator is helping their elevator customers prepare for these changes, and has put out a bulletin on how they will affect building owners and managers. #StaySafe
While Hollywood loves to dramatize free-falling elevators, real-life incidents are extremely rare thanks to advanced safety features like counterweights and steel cables. However, accidents can still occur, such as elevators drifting due to brake failure, posing serious safety risks. To mitigate these risks, updated code changes now mandate rope grippers on all newly installed or modernized traction elevators. ASME A17.3-2002 also requires existing elevators in NYC to comply by January 1st, 2027, with other regions likely to follow. If you’re located in NYC, reach out to Ryan Kraven or Kevin McInerney for more information. Learn more about these code changes at https://lnkd.in/gynNDjvt.

The International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) offers the highest level of training to elevator apprentices and mechanics across North America, including the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Through the Canadian Elevator Industry Educational Program (CEIEP), elevator apprentices in Canada receive comprehensive, hands-on training that prepares them for success in this demanding industry. CEIEP's national requirements, which exceed provincial standards, ensure that all graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their respective regions. CEIEP continues to innovate by integrating advanced technology into its curriculum, including virtual reality (VR) tools that enhance both safety and technical expertise. Under the leadership of Program Director Chris McIntyre and Technology Lead Vithu Selvakumar, CEIEP has successfully launched a 24-hour VR safety course that simulates real-world scenarios, providing apprentices with vital experience before they step onto job sites. The organization’s focus on developing digital and hands-on lab experiences positions CEIEP students to meet the evolving demands of the industry with confidence. As CEIEP continues to advance, their collaborative efforts with NEIEP in the US are poised to bring even greater technological improvements to both programs. With hundreds of IUEC-affiliated companies ready to meet your project needs across the US and Canada, the IUEC stands as a reliable partner for delivering professional, skilled elevator services. Even prior to the inception of the Helmets to Hardhats program, many Veterans found their way into the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC). The skills acquired in the military, such as punctuality, teamwork, leadership, and technical expertise, are highly transferable to careers in the elevator trade – this is why thousands of Veteran service members have found success within the IUEC. Veterans may enter the trade through various pathways, including the Helmets to Hardhats program, the National Elevator Industry Educational Program recruitment process, or through organizing efforts; they bring with them a strong foundation in mechanical, electrical, and technology-based disciplines. To further support Veterans and their families, the IUEC has established the Elevator Constructors Veterans Assistance Program (VAP). This initiative assists Veterans and their spouses in applying for the education benefits available through the GI Bill, as well as disability and other benefits they earned through their military service.
