🌍 Analyzing EL Program Participation in U.S. Public Schools (Fall 2021) 🌍 Why are students participating or not participating in the LIEP? This map highlights the percentage of English Learners (ELs) receiving services through English Language Instruction Educational Programs (LIEPs) across the U.S. The national average is 93.1%, with states like California, New York, and Puerto Rico reaching 100%. However, some states, like Georgia (48.9%) and Iowa (55.3%), fall below 75%, indicating disparities in service accessibility. Twenty-five states reported that at least 95.0 percent of ELs received services in LIEPs in fall 2021. The ten states with the highest percentages of ELs who received services in LIEPs were • West Virginia, Nevada, and Maryland (100.0 percent);10 • Virginia and Texas (99.9 percent); • Florida and South Carolina (99.8 percent); • Wisconsin (99.4 percent); • Idaho (99.3 percent); and • Tennessee (98.9 percent). An additional 14 states and the District of Columbia reported at least 85.0 percent but less than 95.0 percent of ELs receiving services in LIEPs, and seven states reported at least 75.0 percent but less than 85.0 percent of ELs receiving services in LIEPs. The percentage of ELs who received services in LIEPs was less than 75.0 percent in 4 states: • Vermont (72.6 percent) • Wyoming (69.5 percent) • Illinois (55.3 percent) • Georgia (48.9 percent) Let’s work towards ensuring equitable support for all EL students! #EducationEquity #LanguageLearning #Multilingualism SOURCE: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, EDFacts file 116, Data Group 648 and EDFacts file 141, Data Group 678, 2021-22. 🌍 Analyzing the Distribution of English Learners in U.S. Public Schools (Fall 2021) 🌍 This map reveals significant geographic trends in the distribution of English Learners (ELs) across the U.S. The national average sits at 10.6%, with states like Texas (20.2%), California (18.9%), and New Mexico (18.8%) showing much higher percentages, mainly due to their proximity to immigrant populations and diverse cultural communities. In contrast, states such as West Virginia (0.8%) and Vermont (2.0%) have significantly lower EL populations, possibly due to lower immigration rates and demographic differences. An additional 18 states identified at least 6.0 but less than 10.0 percent of their students as ELs, and 14 states identified at least 3.0 but less than 6.0 percent of their students as ELs. The percentage of students who were ELs was less than 3.0 percent in 5 states: New Hampshire (2.8 percent) Wyoming (2.7 percent) Montana (2.4 percent) Vermont (2.0 percent) West Virginia (0.8 percent) Key Insights: - Western and Southwestern states tend to have the highest EL percentages, - Southern and Midwestern states show mid-range EL percentages, while New England and the Midwest have lower proportions. -The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools' report is a significant finding. It shows that 12.9% of students in these schools are ELs, indicating substantial support for Native American students learning English. 👏 Understanding these trends is informative and crucial for addressing educational equity. It's the key to ensuring targeted support for EL students tailored to their regional needs. 🫶 Sources: SOURCE: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Common Core of Data (CCD), “State Nonfiscal Survey of Public Elementary/Secondary Education,” 2021-22; and EDFacts file 141, Data Group 678, 2021-22. Using the Read-Connect-Write processes, ELL Advocates has developed with ELLs in the classroom; it allows students to build confidence in language skills. This method has empowered our ELL students around the nation. This shows them they can be writers. It doesn’t take a certain level of English to allow these students to express themselves. We want them to feel included simply because they are just as capable as the next student. It also allows teachers to gauge students’ level of understanding. We, as educators, believe a weak foundation doesn’t mean a worthless one; it means a growing one. When something grows, the possibilities are endless. 📣Advocate: Help ELL students in your schools reach the support they need. They'll only grow from here if you set them up for success now. 🔎Recognize: Do qualities make you feel your student might benefit from ELL? Get them assessed! 🌻Growth: Support all your students equally and wholeheartedly.  Everyone deserves to grow together. #Elladvocates #ELL #EnglishLanguageLeaening #multilingual #education #supprt #advocate

Strategies for Supporting Multilingual Learners 🌍✏️ Multilingual learners thrive when given the right tools to achieve language proficiency. Here are five effective strategies to support them in the classroom: 🔍 Leverage Background Knowledge Kickstart lessons by connecting to students' prior experiences. Use tools like KWL charts to help them share what they know, and build from there with key cultural or vocabulary insights. Encourage them to express themselves in their preferred languages or through drawings and gestures. 📚 Expand Vocabulary Introduce and reinforce academic and unfamiliar vocabulary before diving into lessons. Graphic organizers, such as word maps, help MLL students make connections and practice using new words across different contexts. 🗣️ Promote Conversations Ensure MLLs have enough time to practice oral language. Use structured prompts, sentence frames, and speaking models to enhance fluency in class discussions. ✅ Check Understanding Regularly assess comprehension by asking students to summarize or apply skills. Graphic organizers, like flow charts, help students organize their thoughts and improve critical thinking. 🤝 Foster Collaboration Group students for peer activities like think-pair-share to create an engaging, inclusive environment. This allows multilingual learners to practice language in a meaningful, community-driven setting.
