DANISH EMBASSY REPRESENTATIVES HONOUR MYKOLAIV RESCUERS 👨🚒 On October 28, representatives from the Danish Embassy paid a heartfelt visit to the courageous Mykolaiv rescuers. Special Attaché for Civil Protection in Ukraine, Johan Theil Nielsen, and Head of the Mykolaiv Office, Jakob Torrild Hansen, joined Ukrainian officials—including Deputy Head of the Mykolaiv Military Administration, Georgiy Reshetilov; Chairman of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, Anton Tabunschik; First Deputy Head of the SES Headquarters in the Mykolaiv Region, Andriy Kvyvoruchko; as well as leaders of local territorial communities—for a ceremony recognizing the Mykolaiv garrison and pyrotechnic teams who work tirelessly to mitigate the consequences of the Russian invasion and clear deoccupied territories of explosive devices. 🎖️ Many rescuers were honoured with prestigious awards, including the state award “For the Defenсe of Ukraine” and distinctions such as the “Cross of Saint Nicholas.” 🚒 During their visit, visit, the Mykolaiv firefighters presented one of the state-of-the-art 45-meter rescue lifts, which has been allocated to the Mykolaiv District as part of a large donation from the Danish Emergency Management Agency to SESU, consisting of 18 similar lifts, 600 breathing apparatuses and maintenance equipment. These lifts will enhance Mykolaiv’s emergency response capabilities. ⛑️ In a further gesture of support, sixteen communities in the Mykolaiv region received firefighting clothing and helmets for local fire brigades, who are often on the front lines extinguishing fires caused by Russian air attacks. Overall, 81 sets with additional jackets were donated by the Danish Emergency Management Agency to support these brave teams. 🤝 This vital partnership was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the Mykolaiv Military Administration, the Danish government, the Nash Chas Charitable Foundation, and DSV - Global Transport and Logistics. 💬 Johan Theil Nielsen expressed his admiration for the rescuers, saying, “I am proud to be here today and to support the courageous Mykolaiv rescuers in the essential work they do daily.”

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS DENMARK: A MISSION IN MYKOLAIV ⚙️ 10 members from Engineers Without Borders Denmark (EWB) arrived from Denmark to Mykolaiv on Sunday evening and have been fully engaged in their mission all week. Early in the week representatives from Mykolaiv City Council, Engineers Without Borders Denmark, and the Danish Embassy Office met to align on key priorities and opportunities for Mykolaiv's rebuilding efforts. Further on, they made field trips to the municipal heat, electricity and utility companies. 🔧 The team’s mission is to provide direct technical support and advice to benefit the civilian population of Mykolaiv and to arrange further assistance for the city’s reconstruction. Throughout the week, EWB volunteers have assisted Admiral Makarov National Shipbuilding University, which was hit by missile attacks twice in 2022. Here, the team advised the management on winterizing the damaged buildings in preparation for potential reconstruction next year. ⚒️ Yesterday, they worked alongside the Danish Red Cross in Ukraine, where EWB’s volunteers provided technical advice and support for relief projects under the Danish reconstruction program, including initiatives in water supply, school reconstruction, and the establishment of shelters for kindergartens and nurseries. 💖 This mission is generously supported by the Rambøll Fonden / Ramboll Foundation and driven by the tremendous commitment of invaluable volunteers. • 💧 Per Aarsleff Offers Modern Sewerage Repair Solutions for Mykolaiv 💧 🚧 Sewage system in Mykolaiv was badly damaged at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Disruption in water supply after Russian shelling, and the quality of water in the pipes after the water supply was restored, led to considerable deterioration. 🦺Mykolaiv has made a significant leap forward in infrastructure modernization by implementing Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining technology for sewer repairs. This advanced, trenchless solution, provided by Danish company Per Aarsleff and funded by the World Bank, enables faster, more cost-effective repairs while minimizing disruption, as there’s no need to excavate. 💬 "Through our assistance in both advanced training and state-of-the-art technology, we aim to not only improve the efficiency of repairs but also significantly reduce the costs for the water utility," said Oleksandr Traverse, General Director of Per Aarsleff in Ukraine. Mayor Olexander Sienkevych said the rehabilitation project was “historical”. 🛠️This collaboration between Per Aarsleff A/S and Mykolaivvodokanal demonstrates how strategic partnerships can provide innovative, cost-efficient solutions that enhance service delivery and support sustainable infrastructure development. 💪 We at the Embassy are especially proud to see that, in addition to the strong government-to-government cooperation established through the Mykolaiv-Denmark partnership, we are also witnessing increased engagement from the Danish private sector. #InfrastructureInnovation #DanishEngineering #CostEffectiveSolutions #WaterSector #CIPPLining #PerAarsleff #WorldBank #UkraineReconstruction

  • ⚡STUDY TOUR TO DANISH POWER PLANTS⚡ 💪 Strengthening Ukraine’s energy security is a strategic priority for Denmark and our energy authorities have collaborated on a broad range of issues since 2014. However, professional/technical knowledge on energy infrastructure is limited in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, which is managing the substantial official development assistance provided by DK through the strategic framework and country programme, including to the energy sector. To increase our knowledge base, Danish Energy Agency organised a joint study tour to a couple of power plants that embody Danish competences in green power and heating. Among the participants were Jakob Hansen, Head of the Danish Embassy Office in Mykolaiv, and Nikolaj Lomholt Svensson, Energy Counsellor at the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine. ⚡The first site was Ørsted's Avedøre Power Station, situated in iconic buildings just south of Copenhagen. The power station work as a flexible backup for wind turbines and solar cells, ensuring that power is available at all times – even on windless days. During winter season, it generates heat corresponding to the consumption of 200,000 households. Like many power plants in Ukraine, Avedøre Power Station has transitioned from burning coal to being a multi-fuel plant. The main fuels are sustainably sourced wood pellets and locally produced straw. The power station has completely stopped using coal. An impressive and inspirational case study for a green transition of Ukraine’s aging power plants. ⚡⚡The second site was ARC – Amager Ressourcecenter, a waste incineration plant famously located under artificial skiing slope CopenHill near the city centre of Copenhagen. Each day, around 200 trucks, many electrically powered, drop off garbage from more than half a million people and 46,000 companies, from as far away as the United Kingdom, preventing landfilling and instead providing heat and power to 140,000 households. It is worth noting that the waste incineration is only the tip of the recycling iceberg. ARC ensures optimal use of the resources contained in the waste in a manner that considers the environment. This starts with the sorting of household waste in ten different categories to treating hazardous waste in an eco-correct manner. Considering the huge challenges with insufficient energy generation and waste disposal in Ukraine, including the Mykolaiv region, the ARC-approach is well worth a closer study. 💡We wish to thank the organisers, including Cristian Cabrera & Frederikke Laursen at Danish Energy Agency, Jørgen Skovmose Madsen & Niels Christian Kjær at Ørsted, and Flemming G. Nielsen ARC. 🎬Fun fact: Danish pop stars Nik & Jay’s music video “Novembervej” features actor Jens Albinus playing a man working at the Avedøre Power Station. • DENMARK SUPPORTS ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN ALL AREAS OF SOCIAL LIFE   👩🌾 Last Friday, Jens Alsbirk, Chargé d'Affaires of the Danish Embassy in Ukraine took part in the Second Donetsk Women’s Congress supported by Denmark alongside others conducted by UN Women. 👩🔧 From the beginning of the large-scale invasion, millions of Ukrainian women were forced to change their everyday lives and take over previously male-dominated roles: lorry drivers, warehouse workers, breadwinners for the whole family. In addition to all their increasing duties, it is crucial that women get better representation in decision making: in private sector, in municipal and governmental bodies. We have a lot of good practice to share in this regard – Denmark took the third position worldwide in Gender Equality Index 2023. 🚜 As an example of how Denmark supports economic empowerment of women I will mention a training course for female tractor drivers conducted in Snihurivka, Mykolaiv oblast by UNDP. The project aims at making sure that women get proper skills to work at an agrarian enterprise and earn their living, and the enterprise is getting skilled workers at the same time. 👩💼 There is no doubt that women can do the job – and we will continue substantial support of this concept. 📢 Jens Alsbirk concluded his speech by saying, “I hope next year the Congress will take place in the liberated Donetsk Oblast. Denmark is doing everything we can to help make this happen”.

⚡ Sharing Danish experiences in energy efficiency   💡 Last week experts from Danish Energy Agency visited #Kyiv to promote energy efficiency – both immediate saving measures to improve energy security in the coming winter and more planned actions that can improve energy efficiency in industries and buildings. 🔦 Actions planned together with #Ukraine’s energy authorities include a new online application, designed in collaboration with NPC UKRENERGO, that will empower consumers to actively contribute to responsible energy consumption in situations with shortages. Unfortunately, this may be all too soon as the heating season kicks in. So look out for announcements about this important new application in the near future. 🔌 To further empower consumers, the material from a highly successful Danish energy savings campaign was shared with the State Agency for Energy Efficiency with the aim to translate and adjust for Ukraine. These hands-on recommendations will be available soon and will engage multiple stakeholder-groups to reach as many Ukrainian households as possible. For those who want to take action now, visit SparEnergi.dk albeit Danish language skills are needed. 🔋 A notable experience was a joint site visit to Carlsberg Group Ukraine Brewery, conducted together with representatives from the Ministry of Energy, SAEE, and the Mykolaiv Regional Decarbonization Office. Carlsberg showcased their advanced energy management system and integration of biogas retrieved from their own waste water plant, boosting competitiveness and achieving zero carbon emissions by 2030 as well as resilience in cases of power outages. The participants also discussed framework conditions for energy efficiency in Ukraine’s industrial sector and how to foster a more favourable regulatory environment. 🕯️ Finally, the delegation met Deputy Minister for Energy Roman Andarak to discuss future collaboration on smart and efficient energy renovation of public buildings inspired by Danish building standards and digital tools for energy optimizations. 🤝 Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine is proud to liaise these highly important and timely activities that are developed through the Ukraine-Denmark Energy Partnership #UDEPP

  • What’s the first thing Danish diplomats do when they arrive to a new apartment far from home? 🧸They go to the nearest JYSK store, of course! It’s all about getting a dose of that distinctly Danish "hygge"—the cozy comfort that becomes essential as the long winter sets in. 💬 This was just one of the warm JYSK-inspired memories shared by Chargé d’Affaires Jens Alsbirk during the celebration of JYSK Ukraine's 20th anniversary earlier this week. As Mr. Alsbirk mentioned, JYSK isn’t only about "hygge." It also stands for values like openness, transparency, equality, teamwork, social responsibility, and ethical governance. JYSK has played a significant role in Denmark’s support for Ukraine, especially since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. “In June 2022, the Ambassador participated in the reopening of the JYSK store in Bucha—just two months after the Russian atrocities in that once peaceful suburb. At that moment, we knew Ukraine had the strength to resist”. 🕯️ Yevhen Ivanytsia, JYSK’s Country Manager, shared insights into the company’s vision, mission, and future plans, with a special focus on charity projects. JYSK is collaborating with various partners, including the "Come Back Alive" fund, whose chairman, Mr. Taras Chmut, was also present at the event. 🧙 On Thursday, JYSK marked the opening of its 100th store in Ukraine, this time in Chernivtsi. That means even more "hygge" and those iconic Christmas elves will be finding their way into Ukrainian homes. JYSK | Ievgenii Ivanytsia | Come Back Alive
