We are just a day away from our online conversation around what Kamala Harris’ historic identity choice means for kids and adults! Yes, there are huge questions of democracy and policy differences at play. But what we’d like to talk about is this: how and to what extent do Kamala Harris’ racial and gender identities, and the representation of those identities, matter? How do they matter for you? How do they matter for the kids in your life? Register to attend live and/or to receive the recording afterwards. Live Spanish interpretation will be available during the event. We’re thrilled to be joined by returning guests Drs. Allison Briscoe-Smith & Ralina L. Joseph and, of course, by you! To register visit: bit.ly/ERKAMALA

As book bans continue to rise, it’s more important than ever to stand up for stories that reflect the diversity of our experiences. Books are powerful tools for learning about race, culture and history—especially for children and young people. Limiting access to these stories denies opportunities for growth, understanding, and empathy. If you’re looking for books that celebrate racial diversity and challenge harmful narratives, here are a few suggestions: 📖 Starry River of the Sky by Grace Lin 📖 Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez and Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation by Duncan Tonatiuh 📖 Julián Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love 📖 We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga by Traci Sorell 📖 Dreamers by Yuyi Morales 📖 Dim Sum for Everyone by Grace Lin Let’s keep lifting up the voices and stories that inspire change! #EndBookBans #BannedBooksWeek #ReadWithPurpose #DiverseBooksMatter #EmbraceRace

Shout out to our friends at the @amherstcollege who are launching an exhibit + community activities inspired by Drawing Differences. Drawing Differences art lessons are here to help kids—and their adults—draw more diversely while having important conversations about race. The lessons can be adapted down or up in age. In fact, the Mead Museum, which mostly caters to college students, has adapted some of the lessons to be used as part of an all-ages exhibit opening in November! The Mead team previewed some of these art activities at recent community events. It is so fun to see so many people stop by and draw themselves or their friends and look and talk at the drawings others made! Learn more about this upcoming exhibit by visiting bit.ly/RePresenting #EmbraceRace #DrawingDifferences #CelebrateDifferences #RePresenting #ArtBeyondTheColorLine

Friendships are one of the most powerful tools kids have for understanding themselves and the world around them. Whether it’s a connection with a friend who shares their racial identity or cross-race friendships, these relationships play a crucial role in shaping how kids experience community, empathy, and belonging. Research has shown that same-race friendships provide emotional safety and spaces of shared understanding, especially for kids of color. While cross-race friendships help kids embrace new perspectives, foster inclusivity, and have positive impacts on academic outcomes. Both are important! 🔎 What questions do you have around cross-race and same-friendships?

EmbraceRace's Drawing Differences art lessons were designed to help kids (and their adults) draw across color lines and, importantly, to talk about what they’re seeing and drawing. The lessons include videos, activities, conversations tips, drawing guides and more - all freely available to you. The lessons are geared for 3rd to 5th graders but can be easily adapted for younger and older kids. Some of you have asked for additional support in using the lessons, particularly in having conversations about race with kids. We are responding with a new opportunity: the EmbraceRace Drawing Differences Workshop! Join us for a 2-hour training workshop on our Drawing Differences art curriculum, Wednesday, September 25, 6:30-8:30pm EST / 3:30-5:30pm PT! To register visit: bit.ly/ER-Coloring

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s recent traffic stop has reignited conversations about racial profiling and police treatment of Black drivers. Bodycam footage shows Hill being forcibly removed from his vehicle by Miami-Dade police, an experience he described as "shell-shocking." Andrew Grant-Thomas, co-founder of EmbraceRace and quoted in the article, highlights how Black individuals often feel compelled to prioritize survival over asserting their rights in encounters with police. Grant-Thomas also pointed out how quickly the public invoked Hill's past allegations of violence to justify potential excessive force. “Because of who they assumed him to be, it seemed to justify the treatment, which doesn’t make sense," Andrew Grant-Thomas (he, him)-Thomas said, urging deeper discussions on the issue. https://lnkd.in/gy_g8jFC
