We bring the heat…literally. The self-contained heater trailer, with a capacity of 780,000 BTU, is a remarkable innovation that has proven to be incredibly useful. While these trailers are most associated with fracking operations to warm the ground, Pennsylvania has taken a pioneering step by modifying three of these trailers to assist with healthcare facility HVAC emergencies during the winter season. These trailers can essentially eliminate the need to transfer or displace medically vulnerable residents. Equipped with an onboard generator, the self-contained heater trailer is entirely self-sufficient, making it an ideal solution for emergency heating situations. The trailer is designed to provide heat to a facility for over 40 hours continuously without requiring additional fuel or power sources. The modified trailers can be quickly deployed by the Emergency Support Function to the affected facilities, ensuring that the heating service is maintained until it can be restored. The introduction of these modified self-contained heater trailers represents a significant advancement in emergency HVAC solutions. By utilizing existing technologies from industries like fracking, the Pennsylvania Emergency Support Function and Department of Health has established a commendable precedent for other states to follow. This innovative approach not only ensures the comfort and well-being of residents during extreme weather conditions but also saves time, money, and resources that would have been spent on temporary relocations and alternative heating arrangements. Recently, I had a chat with Pam about the incredible tenacity of the Amblebrook Community and it's fantastic to see what the power of community and volunteerism can do! This group is setting the bar high and taking charge of the emergency response times at their location. “NEAR - the Neighborhood Emergency Aid Response - is a testament to the power of community volunteerism and coming together in times of need. We are a 55+ community located eight miles north of Gettysburg, where a 911 call can take 15-20 minutes before the ambulance arrives” Pam reports.   Our story began with only 25 homes at the time of our first emergency. One of our residents, a retired fireman, “single-handedly provided CPR to the patient until the ambulance arrived.” Unfortunately, the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, but we knew that the chances of survival were increased based on his training and quick action. This experience prompted a few of us to plan for the future and NEAR was born.   Our first group of 7 volunteer responders invested time, effort, and resources to get trained. We worked tirelessly with Adams Rescue and county leaders to work out the best ways to serve the growing community. Despite initial challenges with operating with almost no budget, the group obtained a 501(3c) certification and worked with AREMS alongside Adams’ County PSAP to be notified of 911 calls. Our team of seven individuals grew to over 40 responders which is divided into four teams rotating coverage for a week at a time. Providing NEAR team members with assigned tasks is our secret sauce; eliminating confusion and preventing necessary tasks from being overlooked.   Residents who have been helped by NEAR frequently post on our Facebook page that they had an emergency, and NEAR was there to help. NEAR teams have been instrumental in responding to multiple calls in Amblebrook from falls, strokes, COVID-19-related symptoms, bleeding, and fainting, among others.   Our goal is to become a QRS so that we can apply for grants and funding that will allow us to purchase the equipment and supplies needed to make emergency response viable for our community. Until our qualification occurs, NEAR has depended on community donations and the generosity of individuals for books, equipment, classes, and testing.   Pam is one of the proud members who completed the requirements for EMR certification - “we believe that our group is instrumental to emergency care being provided quickly and creating a better emergency response infrastructure in our community. We, at NEAR, do not hold ourselves up to be a model for any community, but we have proven that our age and experience level benefit our community at large, Adams Rescue, and Adams County as a whole.” Keep up the fantastic work, NEAR - we're cheering you on every step of the way! #EHSFederation #PennsylvaniaEMS #AmblebrookCommunity #AdamsCounty #Gettysburg Emergency Health Services Federation Scott Fredericks Amblebrook Gettysburg

  • Our staff can be found out and about training individuals from various industries across the region. Recently, they went to Penn National-Hollywood Casino for a day of training for the security personnel.

Staff from Emergency Health Services Federation and the #MRC spent the day teaching Stop the Bleed and Narcan Use training to security staff at Penn National-Hollywood Casino. Like airports, casinos are their own little ecosystem (various sizes) that operate 24/7. Penn National includes a casino, horse track, and outdoor concert venue. Adding additional awareness and training to staff allows them to be better prepared to assist patrons in a time of need. #communityeducation #stopthebleed #narcansaveslives #ehsfederation
