About us

An international leader in the exploration of ethics, the Emory Center for Ethics is dedicated to exploring how ethical issues underlie the decisions that shape our minds, lives, and society. To do so, scholars from across the university gather at the Center to collaborate and study. The Center also hosts public programs, partners and consults with private and public community organizations, and teaches students at every level of university life. The Center is committed to asking tough questions and developing strategies to help enable people and organizations put ethics into practice. What is Ethics? Ethics is the field of understanding human behavior in relation to values. Ethicists carefully and critically explore how we think about and determine right and wrong and analyze the standards and motivations that govern personal and group action. Ethics forms the basis of almost all personal decision-making, whether we are aware of it or not. The same is true of decision-making in professional life, including business, law, and medicine; in civil and political life; and in questions of social justice.

  • It's Emory Giving Week! We are grateful for everyone who supports the premier experiential learning program at the Center for Ethics: the D. Abbott Turner Program in Ethics and Servant Leadership (EASL). The program is designed to enrich the student's life and integrate the practical, intellectual, and spiritual components of their work while deepening their understanding of ethical responsibility and service in the workplace. Gifts to the Ethics and Servant Leadership program allow us to provide a stipend to the summer interns and funds an end of year retreat for the students. This funding ensures that financial need is not a barrier to participation so that the students best suited for each position can access the life-changing experience. Thank you for supporting our students! Make your gift here: bit.ly/3C2ArKl #EASL #EmoryEthics #Emory #WeekofGiving2024 #Ethics #ServantLeadership

  • Happening now - we are honored to host Dr. Claude Kirchner, expert in digital ethics, who is speaking on the competitive value of a guiding AI ethics framework. Given the rapid integration of digital applications, including AI systems, into all aspects of our lives and the proliferation of disparate regulations, his committee's role is particularly intriguing from the current US approach to AI governance. Thank you to Consulate of France in Atlanta and Anne-Laure Desjonquères. • This conversation between Carlos del Rio and Vinay Prasad, moderated by MA in Bioethics program director Gerard Vong, will be a lively ethical discussion around our response to COVID-19. The panel will brings distinguished faculty together to analyze the ethics, science, policies, coverage, and communication about COVID-19 in order to provide lessons for ongoing policy (e.g. annual vaccine boosters and seasonal mask mandates in healthcare facilities) and future pandemic preparedness. This hybrid event is part of the ongoing Brian Shields Lecture in Institutional Ethics. https://lnkd.in/eeWTMhMi #EmoryEthics #Bioethics #ClincalEthics #COVID19 #LaneyGradSchool #Emory #InstitutionalEthics

The recent establishment of France's National Consultative Committee on Digital Ethics through Executive Order (“Décret 2024-463 of May 23, 2024 portant creation du Comité Consultatif National d’Ethique du Numérique) is a significant step in the French debate on digital ethics with potential impacts on AI governance. Given the rapid integration of digital applications, including AI systems, into all aspects of our lives and the proliferation of disparate regulations, the committee's role is particularly intriguing from the current US approach to AI governance. This raises critical questions: Why did France opt for this institutional approach? How does it align with broader French and European digital policies and institutional landscapes? What is the committee's expected mandate and anticipated impact on crucial issues like the metaverse, digital health, healthcare clinical research, generative AI, facial recognition, or digital democracy? We welcome Dr. Claude Kirchner, the Director of the national pilot committee on digital ethics that prefigured this newly introduced but not already active committee. He will provide valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of perceiving Ethics as a competitive advantage in digital innovation and especially in AI systems.  ·    Monday, September 30, 2024 ·    Noon - 1:30 pm Eastern Time ·    Hybrid Event (Register at bit.ly/3B2uCvT) ·    Free and Open to the Public #aiethics #franceatlanta #emoryethics #emory #CAIL #AI #AIHumanity
