Why are technologies that convert plastic waste streams into circular chemical building blocks essential? Let's look at the latest statistics: - Global plastic waste exceeds 400 million tonnes annually - 60% ends up in the environment or landfills - 42 million tons of plastic waste are produced in the US every year - 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year Projections warn that plastic waste could outweigh the fish in our oceans by 2040, but technology, innovation, and collaboration are helping to create change. That's where we come in. Encina's technology transforms waste streams into circular chemicals that are used by our customers to make everyday consumer and industry products. And our partners like Blue Planet Environmental Solutions are diverting millions of tons of plastic waste away from our oceans, landfills, and the environment each day -- waste that we'll repurpose as feedstock. Together we're making a difference, but there's more to be done. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dyDarw_k #decarbonize #oceanplastics #wastestreams #plasticwaste #plastics

When we think of waste streams driving the global waste crisis, the discussion often shifts to plastic bags, straws, and bottles. However, packaging is also a major contributor—every pack of gum, fast food tray, candy wrapper, and more adds to waste in landfills, incinerators, and the environment. Some of the world's largest food and consumer goods companies, including Cadbury, Churchill Container, L'Occitane, and PepsiCo, are leading the charge to increase the use of recycled materials in packaging through advanced recycling technologies. In fact, British confectionery giant Cadbury has recycled over 500 million chocolate bar wrappers to date. Now, that's something you can sink your teeth into! As the world looks for solutions to address the plastic waste challenge, some advocates argue for a reduction or all out ban on the use of plastic. However, a recent report published in Environmental, Science & Technology notes that alternatives such as glass, paper, and aluminum may be worse for the environment based on their GHG emissions. The results of a study discussed in the report indicated that in 15 of 16 applications tested, plastic products had the lowest greenhouse gas emission impact. We rely on plastics for life-saving medical care, safe packaging for food, and many other items essential to everyday life. Applying a circular approach to plastics enables us to use and reuse them over time. That's where Encina fits in -- our technology creates circular chemicals from waste stream plastics enabling our customers to make new products. The result? Less reliance on fossil-based resources and a path forward to decarbonization for manufacturers. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gGUTTQvM #decarbonization #sustainability #circularity

There's a lot of talk globally about the promise of advanced recycling, but many people don't know what it is and why it's such a valuable link to a more sustainable future. Here's a quick and easy to understand synopsis from America's Plastic Makers that explains these high-level benefits: - Helps us recycle more types of materials including mixed, layered or soiled materials. - Increases recycling rates, reduces materials sent to landfills and incineration and lowers GHG emissions compared to virgin fossil-based production. Modernized regulations can help unlock the potential of advanced recycling technologies by scaling technology and accelerating a more circular economy. the LEGO Group is known for inspiring people of all ages to build and create things. Now the iconic company is leading the way to build a more sustainable future. By 2026, 50% of the plastic in Lego’s famous bricks will come from renewable or recycled materials. The company expects to double that by 2032, when 100% of its brick content will come from renewable or recycled materials. Now that's something that future generations can build upon. #lego #innovation #sustainability https://lnkd.in/dcb-YQNk

Plastic waste pollution is a global issue and it's not just landfills. A global register of plastic pollution was recently published in the journal Nature and covered by Barron's which showed that burning plastic in trash is as big of a problem as landfilling. In fact, Costas Velis from the University of Leeds used AI to assist in modeling waste management and found that 52 tons of plastic waste entered the environment in 2020 -- 57 percent through open fires lit in homes, streets or dumpsters. We must do more recycle and reuse our plastic waste. Our planet depends on it -- water, land and air. https://lnkd.in/gEab7CKn #landfills #plasticwaste #recycling
