Encore's Aging Friendly Community Partnership (AFCP) partnered with the Midtown North Precinct and invited Community Officer, Detective Perez, to host a safety presentation at our Lifelong Learning Center. Addressing the issues around safe neighborhoods, the presentation focused on several topics of concern regarding older adult safety. These topics included traveling, transportation, shopping, entering the home safely, medical information, scams and their various forms, and reporting crime. The Age-Friendly Community Partnership helps Encore better serve our older adult members and foster an aging-friendly community in Hell’s Kitchen and the broader west-side area. Our goal is to form a diverse network of local businesses and volunteers who ensure older adults are not isolated, have access to healthy meal choices, and thrive in their community. #agingfriendly #agingfriendlycommunitypartnership #safety #NeighborhoodLiving #EncoreforLife #community

This September, Encore is celebrating Healthy Aging Month with our members by doing a 30-Day Vegan Challenge, inspired by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau’s book! Plant-based diets have health benefits, can change how you think about food, and empower you to improve your well-being. Diet and insufficient nutrition can impact brain and body health as you age. This challenge is one of the initiatives we are introducing to give our members new tools to consider so they can age longer. Encore Older Adult Members will receive a copy of the book, join a community of people doing the challenge, and free plant-based food! Thank you to all of our partners! Every older New Yorker deserves 3 meals a day if they need it!
Today I stood beside colleagues and fellow advocates from AARP New York, LiveOn, United Neighborhood Houses, Citymeals, and chair of the City Council Aging Committee, Council member Crystal Hudson to demand the city “not short change our food.” We advocated for the City of New York to invest more in NYC Aging (The Department for the Aging). Specifically, we asked for higher rate reimbursement for Home Delivered Meals (HDM); and, for the city to fund more than just one meal a day for older adults who are food insecure. We should be providing older adults who need it most three meals a day, 7 days a week. And we need higher rate reimbursements so we can pay hard-working employees who cook and deliver those meals more livable wages. As a compassionate, caring society, it’s what we should do. The only way for that to happen is for the city to pass a budget that invests more in Aging Services and NYC Aging! Human services nonprofit organizations have become more critical than ever to New York City’s functioning and well-being. These nonprofits deliver the lion’s share of safety net services to vulnerable New Yorkers. They have stepped up again and again in recent years to meet the challenges of multiple crises, from an unprecedented pandemic to the largest wave of immigration in a century to rising rates of poverty, food insecurity, homelessness, and mental illness. But a new report by the Center for an Urban Future, which Encore Community Services lent insight to, has found that New York’s human services sector also faces a huge challenge that directly affects its ability to deliver these much-needed services to millions of New Yorkers: a staffing crisis in which the average human services nonprofit has more than 15 percent of its positions vacant, as well as unsustainably high levels of staff turnover. Now is the time for policymakers to strengthen human services organizations for the long term by ensuring they have the staff they need to provide critical services, through compensation increases, contract forms, and a stronger pathway to careers in the sector.
