Led by Endeavor Health's Dr. Lynn Chehab, the Talking Benches program at the Levy Senior Center is bridging the gap between generations. Honduran pre-school teacher, Martha Elena Palma, was beginning to lose hope that the pituitary tumor in her brain would ever be removed, and that her vision would continue to erode. However, when Martha heard about the minimally invasive endoscopic endonasal surgery performed by Endeavor Health Neurosurgeon Dr. Ricky Wong and Otolaryngology Surgeon Dr. Joseph Raviv, her and her family moved heaven and earth to travel to the U.S. to have her third and hopefully final, surgery. Once in the states, Martha met with Drs. Wong and Raviv and they were able to successfully remove her entire tumor and preserve her normal pituitary gland. Her eyesight and energy were almost instantly restored and she was discharged the next morning. Drs. Wong and Raviv point to their longtime collaboration in and out of the operating room as the key to their track record of successful outcomes and innovation for their patients. “Dr. Wong and I have been doing this surgery together now for almost a decade,” shared Dr. Raviv. "We push ourselves a little bit every time we work together, because the other person is right there, shoulder-to-shoulder next to you, and seeing the same thing. This group of 10 nurse leaders from the Netherlands visited Endeavor Health Elmhurst Hospital to learn from a Magnet-designated hospital. Through the DetraCare program, they were able to experience a U.S. healthcare system up close, learn what place the nurse specialist has in it, understand its impact on care quality and the work environment and be introduced to the Magnet Recognition System. The visitors spent time learning about our Magnet, Patient Experience and HR programs and shadowing various departments including Inpatient Oncology, 5 Medical, PCCU. OP Clinic and Prep/Recovery. Nick and Maile, team members from Endeavor Health Northwest Community Hospital, participated in the inaugural Health & Wellness Expo hosted by the Village of Mount Prospect. Hard work, dedication and exceptional patient outcomes culminated last week when both Skokie and Evanston Hospitals were notified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the Commission on Magnet (COM) that each hospital had achieved their fourth Magnet Designation! Magnet designation, the highest honor in nursing, recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing and the highest standards in patient care. This is an all-encompassing hospital award for nursing excellence that could not be achieved without the efforts of our team members throughout all disciplines across the system. On top of these exciting announcements, both hospitals were recognized by ANCC and COM for outstanding exemplars in nursing practice. Endeavor Health represents eight of the 47 Magnet recognized facilities in Illinois. We are excited as we await the Magnet re-designation outcomes for three more of our hospitals that recently had site visits. Our remaining three Endeavor Health acute care hospitals will seek re-designation on a future cycle. Yesterday we welcomed President & CEO at Endeavor Health, JP Gallagher to The Friendship Center to learn more about the Community Investment Fund's impact on our mission to provide access to fresh food and vital resources to our neighbors facing hunger over the past three years. Mr. Gallagher was able to sit down with Executive Director Justin Block to hear more about our deep partnership with Swedish Hospital and how our robust referral program has helped improve the lives of our neighbors.
