About us
The Energy Academic Group provides energy-focused graduate education, research, and outreach at the Naval Postgraduate School. As an interdisciplinary group of highly diverse faculty, the Energy Academic Group (EAG)maintains the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) as a Navy center of excellence for energy graduate education and research. Our efforts focus on solving the Navy, Marine Corps, and Department of Defense’s (DoD) most critical energy problems through graduate education and research. To that end, EAG employs a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach using the basic sciences, engineering, operations and analysis, and business methods.

Exciting news from our Energy Academic Group! We're thrilled to announce the forthcoming publication of "Operational Energy," a groundbreaking textbook co-authored by our very own faculty members, Alan Howard, Daniel Nussbaum, and Brenda Shaffer. This comprehensive work illuminates the critical role of energy as both an enabler and a constraint on military power, providing essential knowledge for military officers, defense strategists, and students in the field. "Operational Energy" stands as the sole textbook dedicated to the intricacies of defense energy planning, analysis, and strategy. It delves into fuel types, geopolitical issues, energy supply risks, and the economic factors of the energy market, alongside offering forward-looking topics for research. Designed for students, scholars, US Department of Defense and NATO course participants, and researchers on US and global energy security, this book is an invaluable resource for understanding the pivotal role of energy in modern warfare and national defense. Join us in anticipating its release in May 2024 and dive into the only resource you'll need to grasp the complexities of operational energy planning and its significance in achieving battlefield success. Stay tuned for more details!

I’m incredibly honored to share a story from the New York Times featuring an inspiring piece on my father, Gil Howard, a retired professor and NPS faculty member, who has taken on a noble mission in Modesto, California. At the age of 82, dad has dedicated himself to teaching Afghan women to drive, a vital skill that for them, transcends empowerment – it’s about practicality and independence in their new home. With over 400 women taught, his efforts shine a spotlight on the substantial difference one individual can make, driven by a deep sense of selflessness and a profound commitment to helping others. This initiative is not just a testament to my father’s character, but also to the Navy values of honor, courage, and commitment that inspire all of us at the Naval Postgraduate School; values that continue to guide our actions, even in retirement. Dad’s work provides these courageous women with more than just driving lessons; it offers them a lifeline, the freedom to navigate their new world, and a path to greater independence. It’s a powerful reminder of how we can all contribute to making a difference in the lives of others, fueled by compassion and a spirit of service. I’m beyond proud of my father’s dedication and the positive impact his kindness has had on the Afghan community in California. His story is a beacon of hope and an inspiring example of the meaningful change we can affect in the world around us.
