For years, we have been evolving our approach to grantee and community engagement, focusing on listening to our partners and those most impacted by inequities. As part of our equity efforts, we engaged a group of grantees early in the development of a new grantmaking strategy focused on statewide policy and systems change, which ultimately became the Just Prosperity initiative. We took a deeply collaborative approach to defining shared objectives and strategies, while openly addressing areas of divergence—an approach that shifts away from traditional foundation practices. As one design circle grantee noted: “I think what made this unique was that it wasn’t one-off. It was really a process of consulting and seeking input from folks on the ground that felt more authentic and rigorous.” What made this engagement different, and what conditions contribute to authentic and reciprocal grantee-funder relationships?
