Why Metal Roofs are Sustainable Metal roof systems have long been popular with architects for their aesthetics and long-term performance characteristics, particularly their low maintenance costs and durability. But now, with the concept of sustainability so widely embraced by the architectural community, metal roofs are being seen in a new light. Metal roofs’ long life, high recycled content, total recyclability, and energy efficiency allow “cool metal roofs” to play a pivotal and vital role in creating the condition under which “humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.” Metal roofing products last longer than conventional ones and are 100 percent recyclable. In contrast to conventional roofing products, there’s no need to replace a product that needs large amounts of petroleum and large areas of landfills to get rid of it. Bending Techniques for Aluminum Differ From Steel When metal roofing manufacturers first introduced aluminum material, much of the aluminum produced was .032 thick. However, the building products industry has gravitated to thicker roofing and trim materials, especially aluminum, over the years. Dade County, Florida, enacted new wind uplift rules for metal roofing that required .040 aluminum for roofs and .050 thickness for trim material to meet the rule requirements. Consequently, contractors were transitioning from .018 to .024 thick Galvalume or Hot Dipped Galvanized steel roofing and trim products to .032 to .050 thick Aluminum. Many contractors assumed aluminum bent the same as steel and thought minor adjustments were needed to make crisp bends on aluminum as they had done with steel. This resulted in some contractors bending these heavier aluminum products beyond their tensile strength limits, resulting in the cracking of the metal and paint and leaving a silver look from the crazed aluminum under the paint. Difference Between Galvalume And Galvanized In Metal Roofing Projects Englert’s nationwide team of architectural sales reps spends considerable time each year counseling architects on which standing seam metal roofing systems, products, and profiles might work best for their design projects. One of the most frequently asked questions by architects is: What are the differences between Galvalume and Galvanized Steel when used in roofing? Combining zinc and aluminum in Galvalume enhances aluminum’s positive and negative effects. Galvalume has barrier corrosion and heat resistance similar to aluminized material, good bare-edge galvanic protection, and forming qualities like galvanized material. Consequently, Galvalume and Galvalume Plus will resist rust, the elements, and fire while providing a sturdy and protective covering. The coating used on Galvalume is essential because it is critical to the length and conditions of the entire warranty of the panel product. Current pretreatments, primers, and superior paint coating have dramatically increased product warranties. Bare Galvalume and coated Galvalume panels have outstanding corrosion resistance in various general environments, including industrial, marine, and even severe environments. Galvalume offers exceptional heat reflectivity, resulting in lower energy load on buildings and improved interior comfort. HTTP://www.englertinc.com

Metal Roofs Perform Well in High Wind When designing a structure in areas prone to hurricane-force winds, it’s essential to consider a metal roof system in your plans and specs. It’s equally critical to specify a reputable manufacturer whose metal roof systems are subjected to and pass all appropriate high-wind tests. Thus, you have the best chance that your roof will survive and protect the structure during a high-wind event. For more info, go to Englert. HTTP://www.englertinc.com

Low Price Metal Roofs, Be Careful What You Wish For How often are your decisions driven exclusively by price and nothing else? If the answer is always yes, you may want to think about your reasoning moving forward. A metal roof system is more than a temporary cover for a commercial building or home. The quality of the material, the quality of the paint that covers that metal roof, and the support you get from the metal roofing manufacturer covering the material and the paint finish are critical. Remember the old Chinese proverb – Be careful what you wish for. Well, be careful because you might get your wish! How many times have you heard the story about a loyal, long-standing customer leaving their current supplier to pursue a lower-cost product? It happens all the time. The Time is Now for Metal Roofing Offsetting the current economic downturn and setting you apart from the competition. Most contractors are feeling a slowdown in new business compared to last year. Soaring inflation has led to higher interest rates, meaning home improvement projects or obtaining a new mortgage costs more. However, the roofing business is recession-proof to some degree. Homes and commercial buildings constantly warrant roofing maintenance, repairs, and replacement. These essential services will continue to be performed regardless of economic conditions. Adding or enhancing a specialty roofing component to your business will help offset the downturn and set you apart from the competition. Learn more about Englert’s selection of metal roofing.
