MEMPHIS, TN (November 8, 2024) – Anna Stokes from Sequoyah High School in Canton, GA is one of more than 800 junior high and high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the country that will represent Varsity Spirit in the 2024 Thanksgiving Tour at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando, Florida. The individuals invited to perform are part of a select group of cheerleaders and dancers chosen as All-Americans during Varsity Spirit summer camps across the country. All-Americans are selected via tryout based on either superior cheerleading or dance skills at camps operated by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), Universal Dance Association (UDA), National Cheerleaders Association (NCA), National Dance Alliance (NDA), or Urban Cheerleading Experience (UCE). Only the top 15% of the cheerleaders and dancers from Varsity Spirit camps earn the chance to march in a holiday parade of this caliber. CANTON, GA (November 8, 2024) - The City of Canton, Georgia is proud to announce that its Historic Canton Theatre has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Fox Theatre’s ‘Fox Gives’ program. This funding will be dedicated to preserving and enhancing the Theatre’s exterior, underscoring the City’s commitment to maintaining its historic assets and fostering a vibrant downtown community. On November 7, the Canton City Council unanimously approved the use of the grant to fund critical exterior renovations for the Historic Canton Theatre, an iconic fixture in Downtown Canton. Planned renovations include refreshing the paint, replacing or restoring signage, windows, doors, and trim, as well as repairing and revitalizing marquee lighting. PRESS RELEASE WOODSTOCK, GA (November 7, 2024) – On Thursday, October 31st, representatives from The City of Woodstock, Georgia Office of Economic Development were pleased to present a check in the amount of $7000 to the Woodstock Wolverines Band Boosters. The funds were raised from the annual Taste of Woodstock event in mid-September, which brings local restaurants and eateries together to share small bites of their favorite dishes with the public. Tasting tickets were priced at $1/ticket, with revenue donated to the Woodstock High School Band Boosters. Despite rain and wind on the day of the Taste event, residents and visitors of Woodstock came out in great numbers to show support for local eateries and the high school band program. The event was kicked off with a performance by the Woodstock Wolverines Marching Band itself; followed by music from local performing artists Levi Ransom, Spencer Scott Smith, and Stephanie Berlanga. CANTON, GA (November 5, 2024) – The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the launch of the 2025 National Civics Bee®, an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Hosted in partnership with The Civic Trust® of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition in Cherokee County will inspire middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions. Middle school students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. After a distinguished panel of judges review the essays, the top 20 students will be selected to advance to their local competition: an in-person live event featuring two rounds of civics questions followed by a Q&A round to test their civics knowledge. The competition enables students to explore issues that matter to their communities, furthering their understanding of civic engagement and fostering responsible citizenship... CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (November 1, 2024) – Cherokee County, along with the City of Canton, Georgia, City of Woodstock, Georgia, City of Holly Springs, Georgia, and City of Ball Ground are hosting the second and final round of public engagement to support the development of the Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 87 fatalities and 436 serious injuries on roadways in the county, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s numeric traffic data. CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (October 30, 2024) – Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency is collecting items for its annual Hugs in A Blanket community outreach program. “Our Hugs in A Blanket program continues to grow each year,” said Cherokee Recreation and Parks Marketing and Community Outreach Coordinator Jessica Hallman. “Last year, the program reached an all-time high by collecting roughly 1,000 items to donate to our local seniors currently living in nursing homes.” Program participants are asked to donate a new warm blanket, a new pair of slipper socks and a caring note. CANTON, GA (October 29, 2024) – The City of Canton, Georgia has selected Aundi Lesley, MPA as its new Economic Development Manager. City Manager Billy Peppers made the announcement this week; Lesley’s first day is set for November 6. “Economic development is crucial to the citizens of Canton and the community as a whole,” according to Peppers. “Aundi has the skill sets and experiences we were seeking in an economic development professional. I believe her collaboration mentality will work well with other members of Team Canton.” Currently, Lesley serves as the Downtown Development Director for the City of Rome Georgia, a position she has held since 2020. She has also worked with the City of Carrollton as Main Street Director and as Program Coordinator for the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center.
