The playful and elevated two-storey addition for Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital immerses scientists, staff, patients, and their families in the serenity of the surrounding nature. This new research tower, suspended over the Sunnybrook ravine, offers leafy views in all directions. The reflective aluminum soffit above the entrance piques Children’s interest and mirrors their movements amid the lush greens. I am glad to announce The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) - Ontario Region's first event of the year titled Performance Based Fire Design. The presentation will be conducted by Matthew Smith of Entuitive where he will provide an introduction to structural fire engineering, a powerful approach for optimizing fire protection strategies and analyzing complex structures. Structural fire engineering goes beyond prescriptive requirements allowing for performance-based solutions that enhance both safety and design efficiency. In Canada, it can be achieved through alternative solutions, providing engineers with a viable framework to address fire safety in innovative ways. Matthew is an Associate at Entuitive with more than 13 years of experience in the engineering industry. He is a structural and fire safety engineer by training, with a master's degree in fire safety engineering where he focused on demonstrating international structural fire engineering practices that could be applied to Canadian structural design. He leads Entuitive's Fire Engineering service where he provides both prescriptive building code consulting and performance-based fire engineering to new and existing buildings.
