Happy #NationalNonprofitDay! EIA has accomplished some amazing things over the past three decades as a small nonprofit, but we still face some big challenges. The fight for our future isn't over, and we need your help to keep going. Donate today: https://lnkd.in/epv_Eqfm

We use intelligence to create positive, lasting change for our environment 🌳🐘🌦️
About us
The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is an independent campaigning organization committed to bringing about change that defends the natural world from environmental crime and abuse. Our campaigns to protect endangered wildlife, forests, and the global climate operate at the intersection between global trade and the accelerating loss of natural resources and species. EIA takes advantage of its independence and mobility to produce game-changing primary evidence and analysis of these problems and to build lasting alliances, institutions, and policies to address those challenges. EIA’s methods are unique; we utilize undercover investigations, intelligence reports, and campaigning expertise to achieve far-reaching environmental protection.

The Montreal Protocol, known as the world's most successful environmental treaty, is commencing its annual meeting in Bangkok this week. Among the critical issues on the agenda, Parties must prioritize addressing unaccounted emissions of HFC-23, a powerful greenhouse gas threatening the Protocol's climate legacy. A new Environmental Investigation Agency US report sheds light on the persistence of rogue emissions despite the Protocol's success in phasing out ozone-depleting substances: https://lnkd.in/g6D6rRCW Technical reports from expert panels at the Montreal Protocol highlight a significant gap between inferred and reported emissions, with unreported emissions from China contributing 20 to 50% of the global emissions gap since 2015. We estimate about 106,000 tonnes of cumulative HFC-23 emissions have occurred since 2016. That is 1.56 billion tonnes of CO2-- equivalent to 371 million gas-powered cars on the road for a year. While the impacts are known, significant data gaps persist worldwide! The Scientific Assessment Panel is presenting right now on this gap. The unchecked emissions of HFC-23 are a scandal that threatens to undermine global efforts to combat climate change. The fluorochemical industry’s failure to curb these emissions, despite the availability of cost-effective and efficient technologies, is unacceptable. The international community, starting at the Montreal Protocol meetings THIS week, must act decisively to close the emissions gap, enforce stricter regulations, and ensure transparency in reporting. #MontrealProtocol #ClimateChange #China #HFCs #Superpollutants

As delegates gather in Bangkok for Vienna Convention & Montreal Protocol (Ozone) Secretariat #MOP36, we call on all Parties to show why the #MontrealProtocol is truly the world's most successful environmental treaty. The need to act faster and go further in our climate ambitions could not be clearer: https://lnkd.in/eP68fJ8K A main agenda item is lifecycle refrigerant management (LRM). Well-trained and well-equipped technicians are the backbone of effective LRM, and critical to unlocking its significant ozone and climate benefits. #MOP36 attendees, join us and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on 10/28 at 18:00 in CR-3 to hear our panel of experts discuss recommendations for LRM workforce development: https://lnkd.in/eg75_Mzy

Balsa wood is a critical component of wind turbine blades due to its light yet resilient nature: https://ow.ly/2R7h50TSTZn But as demand for wind energy grows, where is all that balsa coming from? “Balsa harvesting has already created - and is still creating - all this environmental, social, and economic havoc in resourcing countries like Ecuador and Peru.” Our Asia Policy Specialist Haibing Ma spoke with E&E News about the "uncomfortable questions" our new report raises on the ways the wind energy industry sources balsa wood for turbine blades: https://ow.ly/v0qX50TSTZm

Noise pollution in the ocean has risen dramatically over the past 50 years, mostly due to increased commercial shipping. For #NationalMarineSanctuaryDay, learn how #MPAs like Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary are conducting research to track the sea's changing soundscape: https://lnkd.in/eyRsz8c3 Underwater noise pollution is a problem that extends far beyond the California coast, though. We work with international agencies like the International Maritime Organization to #TurnDownTheVolume and protect marine life from the harmful impacts of ocean noise: https://lnkd.in/ecnHMde6

Light, strong, and durable, balsa wood is uniquely suited for use in wind turbine blades. However, growing demand for wind power - especially in the U.S. and China - is putting pressure on the Ecuadorian Amazon, which supplies most of the world's balsa. Transitioning to renewables is key to addressing the climate crisis, but energy is only as clean as its supply chain. Our new investigation connects the dots between deforestation, human rights violations, and leading wind turbine blade manufacturers: https://lnkd.in/gf_wqdPc
