About us

The Environmental Justice Institute is a community sustainable resource center for rural and economically-challenged minority and low- income populations around Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in Aiken and other communities in South Carolina. The Environmental Justice Institute strives to reduce the burden of Environmental Justice stressors and to reduce the burden of Environmental Justice stressors and to reduce the burden of health disparities. The Environmental Justice Institute aims to: 1) Raise awareness among community members about Environmental Justice and health issues affecting their communities. 2) Provide communities with the tools to identify and analyze their Environmental Justice and health issues and conditions. 3) Develop leadership capacity within the community to increase the likelihood of success in sustaining community interventions, and 4) Attract and mentor students toward the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) discipline to build a sustainable pipeline for training, education, and employment.
