#Foodasmedicine interventions for #diabetes often fail when they're based on #groceries. To be successful, look to prepared meals like those from Epicured. A brand-new study in JAMA shows that providing groceries to #diabetics -- even with support from #dietitians and #nurses -- doesn't improve glycemic control. The comprehensive program provided healthy groceries for 10 meals per week for an entire household, plus dietitian consultations, nurse evaluations, health coaching, and diabetes education. Smart design, but no discernable results better than a control group in controlling #hemoglobin #a1c. I suspect the reason is that many diabetics lack the time, energy or equipment to prepare healthy meals themselves. This is why prepared meal interventions succeed where groceries plus coaching fail. New research further confirms that #foodasmedicine can save #MedicareAdvantage, #Medicaid and commercial #healthinsurance carriers billions annually. Tufts University’s School of #Nutrition and Policy found national implementation of medically-tailored meals (MTMs) in Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance for patients with both diet-related #chronicconditions and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) limitation could be associated with “approximately 1.6 million averted #hospitalizations and net cost savings of $13.6 BILLION in net health care costs in the first year.”Almost $6 BILLION in annual savings is attributed to #dualeligibles alone. The Tufts study also shows the massive opportunity for food as medicine vendors: over $21 BILLION annually in Total Addressable Market and potential revenue. #Healthplans in Medicare Advantage and Medicaid need to stop thinking of food benefits as a marketing and retention tool, and recognize MTMs as the clinical and quality ace in the hole they are. 📣 Nutrition is often overlooked as a form of therapy to treat and manage diseases such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, etc. 📣 And even if it was utilized as a form of therapy, one would automatically assume that the food would flat out be distasteful. Using food as a method to treat isn’t novel because this exist in the Chinese culture. Growing up in a Chinese household I was always subjected to Chinese medicine when I was sick. I would describe it as a dark colored soup with mud based texture at the end. It was extremely bitter that follows a weird indescribable after taste. I would normally hold my breath and drink it in one gulp. I am glad folks like Epicured are revolutionizing this space, adding #michelin chefs into the mix so that the food is both healthy and delicious. They have dietitians, food scientists and world class chefs to design food that fits different diseases — really zeroing onto the nutritional and tasty profile. I m sure there is a flavor to compliance ratio. As a clinician I am either armed with pills or armed with a scalpel when tackling ailments. I would never imagine of writing a presciption for chicken noodle soup. Well I can still imagining that considering that I have left clinical practice since 2018. I will stick to my strengths and write more food based prescriptions coming 2024! 😂No more bitter soups for me!😂
