Did you know? Older adults are the fastest-growing age group within the unhoused population in California. Solomon, a senior resident of ECS’ 1064 Mission Street, is deeply familiar with some of life’s challenges that can cause a person to become unhoused. After surviving the Rwandan genocide, Solomon was granted asylum in the U.S. In the following years, Solomon suffered further hardships which led him to become homeless. After being unhoused for nearly 16 years, Solomon was connected with ECS and placed into permanent supportive housing. Now in a safe and stable home, Solomon has found a renewed sense of life which has strengthened his well-being. Though Solomon’s story is distinctive, some of the challenges he faced are reflective of many older adults who are acutely vulnerable to becoming unhoused. ECS is committed to helping the lives of seniors experiencing homelessness for the better and has partnered with Begins With Home to showcase Solomon’s story. Check out the video below to hear from Solomon on how housing has changed his life. This #HealthyAgingMonth, help seniors like Solomon by making your gift at www.ecs-sf.org/donatenow. Together, we can end senior homelessness and help vulnerable older adults receive the housing and services they need. Solomon's story is also available to view on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/g-3EhxgE

A recent report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness found that “the number of children experiencing homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year nationwide was greater than the total population of children living in 28 states.” This alarming data underscores the critical need to strengthen rental assistance and support for families and youth, as preventing and ending youth homelessness is key to breaking the cycle of adult homelessness. #EndYouthHomelessness
As children across the nation head back to school, a new data snapshot from the Alliance’s Homelessness Research Institute finds that the number of children experiencing homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year nationwide was greater than the total population of children living in 28 states.

Program expansion alert! For people experiencing homelessness, holding onto even the most basic possessions can be challenging. In partnership with San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, ECS has been addressing this need by running a property storage program that provides 704 storage bins at 680 Bryant Street. In July, ECS began managing a second property storage location at 74 6th Street. This new location offers a maximum of 424 storage bins. Both locations provide 6 months of safe storage and are open 9 AM-5 PM from Monday to Friday. We’re grateful to the wonderful ECS team (pictured in the second photo) who support storage needs for people experiencing homelessness. The Property Storage team plays a critical role in welcoming participants, conducting intakes, helping log and store items, and sharing important information about accessing resources and services.

Last week, ECS staff and partners from Philanthropy By Design at Huntsman Architectural Group took a tour of the newly repainted Sanctuary interim housing site. To create relaxing environments and enhance residents’ well-being, ECS' Behavioral Health team undertook evidence-based color theory research, resulting in residents being able to enjoy spaces that are newly painted in zen colors, such as gray-blue, green, lavender, beige and earth tones. ECS is grateful to the Huntsman Architecture team for their support with the planning and design of this space/effort. Partnerships such as these make a world of difference for the vulnerable people ECS serves. “The housing crisis has moved from blue states to red states, and large metro areas to rural towns. In a time of extreme polarization, the too-high cost of housing and its attendant social problems are among the few things Americans truly share. That and a growing rage about the country’s inability to fix it.” Lack of housing affordability is not just a challenge in the Bay Area—it’s a challenge facing Americans all over the country. This The New York Times article offers insights into how housing costs have skyrocketed across the country and potential solutions in addressing it. Spoiler alert: we NEED to build more affordable housing. https://loom.ly/EbtTx8Y

Interim housing offers stable short-term living environments for people experiencing homelessness as they work to secure more permanent housing and access critical support services. Interim housing can play an important role in addressing homelessness and supporting people on their path to stability and self-sufficiency. There are several program modalities within interim housing: ✴️ Emergency Shelters, which offer immediate, short-term housing and essential services for individuals and families in crisis situations, such as natural disasters, extreme weather conditions, or sudden homelessness. These shelter services can be offered year round or during specific times of the year. ✴️ Navigation Centers, which are similar to traditional year-round shelters except that they provide 24/7 access to temporary housing and allow partners, pets, and possessions. ✴️ Transitional Housing, which offers longer-term temporary housing with support services for up to two years as residents work to end their homelessness. Transitional housing residents allocate 30% of their income into savings accounts, which is returned upon exiting the program, to support their exit of homelessness.
