My background is multifaceted, blending art, social sciences, and tech innovation with decades of experience in human-centered design. I've spent my career helping companies elevate customer experiences, and now, I'm applying this approach to healthcare. My personal experience as a cancer survivor adds another layer to my understanding. My own health journey and extensive research with patients revealed gaps in care delivery. Our mission is to create a more humane, compassionate, and equitable system. Receiving an insensitive cancer diagnosis and experiencing medical errors left me feeling devastated and deeply concerned about our healthcare system. However, I refused to let these negative experiences define me or discourage me from taking action. Instead, I channeled my pain into purpose, making it my mission to transform healthcare delivery for future patients. No one should endure poor quality care on top of illness. The healthcare system is in dire need of a major overhaul. While healthcare providers may not always see this from their perspective, it becomes glaringly apparent when they or a loved one becomes ill and experiences the system as a patient. It is imperative that we come together to advocate for and redesign a healthcare system that puts the safety, well-being, and dignity of all patients first. This is especially critical for marginalized populations who bear a disproportionate burden of poor outcomes, inadequate care, and higher mortality rates in America. By working collaboratively, we have the power to rebuild a healthcare system that truly serves those it is meant to help. Six years ago this week, following a series of medical failures, I received the devastating news of my cancer diagnosis via email. Determined to turn adversity into purpose, I pledged that if I survived, I would dedicate myself to enhancing healthcare delivery for fellow patients. Fast forward a few years: 🔹 Founded Equify Health to revolutionize healthcare experiences 🔹 Received two healthcare innovation awards totaling $1.75 million 🔹 Led a $750K research grant at a leading academic hospital 🔹 Appointed to the editorial leadership board of a leading medical journal 🔹 Delivered keynote addresses at national medical conferences. Today was a particularly poignant milestone for me. I had the privilege of delivering a keynote address at The National Institutes of Health, where I illuminated the unnecessary suffering experienced by patients navigating healthcare. I emphasized the heightened obstacles and harm faced by marginalized individuals. Moreover, I proposed a fresh perspective on advancing health equity centered around revolutionizing patient care experiences. The reception to my talk was affirming. My dream started six years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer and witnessed a gap in care delivery, degrading patient outcomes. After conducting further research, I realized that marginalized communities were the ones most negatively impacted and (more importantly) that the barriers to good healthcare were not all visible to healthcare providers. My firsthand experience, coupled with decades of experience in human-centered research and innovation, afforded me unparalleled insight into the root of the problem.
