The great AI talent pivot is under way. A labor pool of highly qualified AI-ready talent is getting bigger. Businesses that are willing to look for highly transferrable skills will benefit by attracting people and training them with the AI skills they need.   It’s no secret that businesses are struggling to find people who possess AI-centric skills such as prompt engineering, computer vision, programming, data science, and data analysis. According to McKinsey, 51% of gen AI creators and heavy users say they are planning to quit within the next three to six months. But for businesses that need the talent now, candidates are flooding the market. As noted below, high-tech firms ranging from Alphabet to Microsoft have enacted widespread downsizing. People with skills in areas such as data science and software development are competing for a tight pool of available jobs.   I see a win/win opportunity for job seekers and companies that need AI talent. The key is for businesses to look for transferrable skills.   For example, an experienced data scientist likely possesses background in areas such as statistical analysis and mathematical modeling that are critical for AI. AI is such a rapidly evolving (and still young) field that the barriers for reskilling are relatively low enough for such an individual to pivot, too.   But businesses need to apply creativity and flexibility to know what transferrable skills to look for. My advice to businesses: the market is opening. Come up with a list of transferrable skills and start applying them when you recruit for positions, including the keywords you use when you look for talent on LinkedIn.
