ESMAP is a partnership between the World Bank and over 20 partners working to achieve universal access to affordable and sustainable electricity by 2030 and to achieve decarbonization across the energy sector For 40 years, the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance program has worked with developing and emerging-market countries to solve their energy challenges. Backed by 24 partners, including governments and foundations, ESMAP is at the forefront of the energy transformation. ESMAP focuses on reform from the ground up, starting with government policies, and regulatory and operational frameworks. This ensures that energy solutions are not just sustainable, but actually sustained. Set up in 1983 to help low-income countries respond to oil price increases, ESMAP now has a diversified agenda from household energy and clean cooking, to national policy reform and integration of cutting-edge clean energy technologies and solutions.

It was a pleasure to represent ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program - World Bank today at the #VeniceHydrogenForum2024. It was very insightful to approach the clean hydrogen discussion from Mediterranean markets perspective. In the strategic dialogue about financing hydrogen value chain, I had the pleasure to discuss with Timo Bollerhey Alessandra Pasini Andrew Johnstone Ghada Darwish and Cristian Carraretto about projects risks, we underlined the specificities of clean hydrogen offtake risks (and the differences from electricity renewables risks). Two of the main challenges raised were: (1) the scale of financing resources needed to achieve the required 100 billion USD, thus the need of coordination between financial institutions; (2) the need of providing support to projects achieve Final Investment Decision. We have discussed how the 10 GW Lighthouse Initiative can help to face both challenges. Thank you very much Caroline Biotteau for the great moderation and Jonas Moberg for the invitation. Just wrapped up a productive site visit to the Chungju Dam Reservoir Floating Solar Project of K-water (Korea Water Resources Corporation), as part of the Knowledge Exchange on Floating Solar, co-organized by ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program in close partnership and with the support of the Korea Program for Operational Knowledge #KPOK. In this picture I am with Zara Gharagyozyan, Head of the Procurement Department of ARMENIA RENEWABLE RESOURCES AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY (R2E2) FUND. Chandrasekar Govindarajalu, #ESMAP Co-Practice Manager will join PROBLUE to discuss innovative technologies to reduce 90% of the consumption of energy for #Cooling. A technology known as Seawater Air-Conditioner (SWAC).
Seawater Air-Conditioning (SWAC) technology can reduce energy consumption for cooling by up to 90%. It taps cold, deep seawater to replace cooling from energy-intensive chillers. SWAC systems are installed with no harm to the marine ecosystem and the seawater returned to the ocean can be beneficial to coral reefs. Join us this Thursday October 17 from 8:30 to 10:00 am ET, for a PROBLUE-ESMAP webinar which will provide an overview of the SWAC technology, share experiences from existing facilities in the developed world and present studies on three SWAC facilities in the Caribbean. During last month’s #ClimateWeek, UNDP co-organized two sessions with the World Bank ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program, World Health Organization, UNDESA, and FAO, focusing on clean cooking. It was incredible to reconnect with colleagues and friends, brainstorming ways to collaborate and scale our efforts. Here are some key takeaways from our discussions: 1️⃣ Momentum is building: Accelerating access to clean cooking is central to a just and inclusive energy transition, but we need to translate this into real action for the communities that need it most. #LNOB 2️⃣ Investment is critical: $8 billion per year is required to close the clean cooking gap, while the economic impact is valued at $2.4 trillion—showing the investment is well worth it. ✨ 3️⃣ Integration is key: Clean cooking should be seamlessly integrated into broader energy access and transition initiatives. Strategic partnerships that align with existing and future programs will be crucial to progress. 🌱 4️⃣ Context is everything: Countries must lead their own inclusive clean cooking transitions. ⭐ 5️⃣ #NDCs present an opportunity: Now is the time to embed ambitious clean cooking targets in NDCs, aligning with national and local development priorities. At the heart of this transformative approach is innovation—rethinking how we design programs that not only provide energy access but also integrate climate resilience, gender equality, and sustainable food systems. UNDP stands at the forefront to advance clean cooking as a lever for development through the adoption of a whole-of-society approach that places people first. Experts from the world over gathered this past week at #GOGSFE24. #ESMAP’s booth was visited by old and new friends. We welcomed experts, government clients, practitioners, innovators, students, entrepreneurs, off-grid solar manufacturers and advocates. They gathered at our booth to do lots of #Networking but also to learn from our #ESMAP colleagues asking dozens of questions about how we do what we do, and for whom. Many shared success stories while others were just starting their #OffGridSolar journey and wanted to learn from ESMAP’s experts. All in all, our booth attracted a fascinating mix of talent, dedication, and innovation in the pursue of #PoweringAfrica. #SustainableCooling #EnergyAccess #ClimateAction #SDG7 #GOGSFE24 #TransformingLives #EnergyTransition #M300 #LivablePlanet Fanny Missfeldt-Ringius Clemencia Torres de Mästle, Stephanie Nsom, Svitlana O., Ifunanya Nwandu-Dozie, Andrew Kent, Andrea Arricale, Raihan Elahi, Samantha Constant, Deea Ariana, Charlie Miller, Lucie Blyth Hannfried von Hindenburg, Ph.D. Besnik Hyseni, Sameer Shukla, Marjorie Araya, Jon Exel, James Knuckles, Ph.D. , Jem Porcaro Yabei Zhang, Aaron Leopold, Heather Austin Ashish Shrestha, Jennifer Lynch Dana Rysankova, Yadviga Semikolenova, Leo Blyth, Ammu Kannampilly and many more! During the #GOGSFE24 forum in #Nairobi, The World Bank #ESMAP in partnership with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), co-led the session on “Cooling to Improve Lives and Livelihoods.” More than #300M in rural areas face health and productivity risks due to lack of, or insufficient access to cooling. Access to space cooling is becoming increasingly important to protect the lives and livelihoods, reducing exposure to heat stress in homes, schools, clinics, and workspace, and improving productivity for those who work or study under challenging heat conditions. Drawing from our latest joint report “Sustainable Cooling in Off-Grid Rural Areas,” the session spotlighted the latest developments and opportunities on technologies, business models, and financial innovations.
